Time span between block casting date and engine build date?
What's the shortest time that can be found between the casting date and the build date found on the engine pad?

others smarter then me pointed out a small block could have the same date as cast and assembled. as the block would have been poured and cast on the first shift early on, machined in the second shift and later on down the assembly line. while that would hardly happen blocks cast within a week and built is more typical

I would say so. the flint small block V8 plant was running over 200 engines a hour. this is for a small block right?

I once owned a small block 67 that I purchased from the original owner that had a casting date one day prior to the assembly date. It was a very well documented real deal, so I know that one day between the assembly and casting date can be real.

Some comments have been made that some of the block castings would hardly have cooled off prior to machining and building them. Chevrolet built a bazillion cars in the 60s, and the 327 (assuming here, as you didn't specify) was a very popular engine at the time. I don't think a one-day delta is even considered unusual.

It's a 300HP small block with an Automatic gearbox, not like it's a special car or anything. And since it apparently have the right casting date, it makes it even more of a mystery. Why going through the hassle of getting a block with the right date and then make such an ugly restamp.

By the way, I did buy the car. Despite that it's not a matching number
Now I'm trying to figure out what is matching (if anything) and what is not.
I know that the intake is an aluminum from a 69 or 70.

why you ask. I can't give you a solid reason. but will say there are a LOT just like that. correct dated block and a bad re-stamp. but I can see why you would re-stamp a 300hp auto. a born with engine car will always command a higher price then a NOM car. some higher then others. this being on the low side of the scale

Anyway, I'm happy with it just as it is. Going to use it as my daily driver and the Small Block + Aut, PB, PS. will hopefully work great for that. It's sure fun though, looking at the numbers and stuff, trying to figure out when/what/how.
Going to continue to search for a BB though

Well congrats. Let's see some pictures of the car in its new home. Hope you put a lot of miles on the car and enjoy it for what it is. That car should be a blast to drive if it's dialed in.

Though, it's a project under making. The film is from a shake down. We are still building and tuning. Hopefully we will make it out on the track next year again

I am very familiar with the 1968-69 AMX. I still love the car, but my 69 now belongs to a guy in Colorado. It went from my wife's car to stripped down street racer to Platinum level show car out on the West coast.
I was very familiar with the "players" back in the day, and remember even talking to Shirley Sheehan (Drag-on-Lady fame) about performance changes to my car. A friend of mine in Texas owned one of the 52 Hurst-Prepared Super Stock AMX racers. Another friend was given one of the three (3) AMX-3 mid-engine prototype cars to restore for Dick Teague (AMX car designer). It was Dick's personal car.
Let me know if I can help with this car in any way. I still haven't forgotten how they are put together.

Good to know Larry.
This AMX is a 2 owner survivor from Texas. Was driven until 1989 and then put in a garage.
390, 4spd/Hurst, Go Pack. Only thing missing is the original battery hold down. So if you know of that part pls let me or my brother know.
Fun you mention the SS AMX, those are wht insipred me to dig in to the World of Gen1 AMX. I have a friend racing one of the 52 cars here, and I know of one more not to far away from us.
Cheers
