Over the winter I am having the grill and front bumpers re-chromed. I know how to remove the grill (teeth) but not sure how to remove the front bumpers. How many bolts involved that need to be taken out to remove these bumpers and where are they situated?
First you will have to completely remove the grille because the grill bar attaches to the bumpers. Remove the two nuts on each grill bar bracket that are behind the inside rear of the bumper.
Then there are just 2 bolts per bumper - one in the front and one on the side. Remove those bolts and the bumper should come off. You may want to loosen a couple of the bumper bracket bolts just to reduce any tension so the bumper comes off easier.
It might also be advisable to tape off around the bumper area so when you remove the bumper it doesn't scratch the paint.
I built a jig out of 2x4's that supported the grill teeth assembly which greatly helped me during the disassembly and reassembly. I wish I had a photograph for you but the jig has a plywood base with 2 vertical pieces attached to it. Attached to the vertical pieces were 2x4 horizontal pieces spaced to fit between the teeth (almost like the forks on a forklift). Its pretty basic and it is like having a 3rd and 4th hand preventing any chrome surfaces from touching each other. Those teeth are sharp!
