The windshield wiper cables on my 62 got stuck this last July and I had to take the motor off to get them loose. But now I can't get the cables back on
the motor pulley. What is the trick to doing this? Please help.
Mag,
The removal and installation of the wiper assembly is described in detail within section 12-5 of the ST-12 Service Guide. There is also a picture (Fig.5) of the assembly with all components. It says that the "drive cables to the right transmission assembly only are crossed over each other". The left is not. To " adjust cable tension, press in on the outer end of the transmission shaft. This adjustment must be performed after the transmission is installed and the drive cables connected". End quote. If you don't have an ST-12, give me a fax# and I'll send you the pages! Good luck!
It can be quite a bit more complicated than that, especailly if the transmissions are stuck. First thing to do is determine if the transmissions will release the cable. If not, they are impossible to install. With the transmission shaft depresssed, the INNER cable should unwind approximately 3/4". While an assistant depresses the shaft, extend the cable as far as it will go and have the assistant release the shaft while the cable is extended. Once the cables are extended, the cables will go back on the center pulley. They will only go one way. The right one does cross over. Once the cables are back on the pulley, they can be tightened by depressing the shaft to release the spring and rewind the cable.
If the shafts are stuck, (most are unless they have been rebuilt) you will have to remove the transmissions for repair/rebuild. Usually, they can be freed up by soaking them in penetrating oil for a few days and then gently tapping the shaft. :D
