Default Guys with the S10 spare tire: Have you ever used it?

Here is why I ask:

I have had an ebay watch out for one of those for over 2 years. A few weeks ago I hit the jackpot.. and like-new tire for $80 SHIPPED.

It arrived last week and today... being the paranoid type... I tried a test fit in the driveway. Guess what? It does not fit!

The bolt pattern *IS* correct - however, the center hole for the hub is about 1/16 of an inch smaller... just enough so that after some pounding, I concluded it was not going on.

Before you comment:

- My hubs and wheels are 100% original
- The seller specified "94-04 Chevy S10 (4x4) T155/90/D16 COMPACT SPARE DONUT WHEEL TIRE 16X4" in the listing

So is this a different wheel?? Is the non 4x4 1/16 of an inch larger, or has no one ever actually put one of these on a C1?

I have that exact S10 compact spare and it fits fine - tight but fine....on the '61.
I would just grind a little off the center hole portion and worry about something else

You aren't supposed to drive far on those tires anyway (unlike some of the idiots I see on the turnpike)...

I am not a fan of these as spares. The diameter size difference will play havoc on the Differential Clutches when used on the rear. Al W.

Fortunately, my '62 is one of the very few non-posi cars, so I'm OK. I just happen to have a 2000 S-10, so I pulled the spare out and tried it on the '62. Fits fine.

I have one in the tub of my '66 roadster ... I've never had to use it - actually, I've never even had it on the car! Maybe I should check that?

Not much good if it doesn't fit!
And a flat on the rear of a posi car just means two tire changes to get home.

When I got my '66 many years ago it came with Western-KH knock offs and a S-10 wheel with a 1" spacer in the tub. Never used it and bought 5 rallye wheels off a '68. Those are a tight fit. I use the K O wheels sparingly.

Worry about something else, eh? :-)

My head would have exploded if this happened on the roadside with an actual flat tire!

Funny thing is I actually purchased a full-sized spare for my original spare wheel about 30 days ago, having given up on ever finding an S10 temp. I don't have a POSI rear, so it would be fine for my car. And yes, I would never drive more than to the nearest tire shop, and never more than 40 MPH.

But now I'm thinking I'll just go back to the full-size spare and live with the bump under the trunk mat.

Anyone in S. Cal want a S10 temp tire for $80? :-)

My temp spare is 195/75/15. It fits my '67. The OP listed 155/90/16. I think the basic problem is the 16* wheel.

Some readers may not get Frankie's statement, so. If the flat is on the rear, jack the car carefully in the center, switch the front tire to the rear and the temp on the front. Posi unit is safe. Dennis

Guess I don't understand the problem. As Frankie said, just grind the center portion down until it fits. Even if it's not exactly concentric, it's not going to hurt anything.

The 16" wheel is not a problem at all.. no other clearance issues. And the outer diameter of the tire is within 10%:

205 x .75 = 153.75
155 x .90 = 139.5

There is a turned lip on the edge of the center hole. I'm not an expert machinist, but I think trying to grind that could turn into a huge mess fast.

Frankie's photos got me thinking: I only tried it on the front.. It might work on the rear..????? Then I would need a double-swap if the flat is on front.....????

I have an S10 spare and I actually tried it an it worked fine. I think whatever you got might not actually be an S10 spare.

Good point! Are you sure the bolt holes line up? Have you tried to mount it on the rear yet?

First you purchased a 4X4 wheel. The S-10 4X4 wheel is completely different than a 4X2. I have a 4X4 S-10, and have had many S-10's through the years. The center is slightly smaller due to a different hub. Also the wheel offset is different. I don't think a temp spare was available for a 94-04, 4X4 S-10. There was a temp spare for a earlier / square body S-10, 4X4. The Car-parts site does not even list a 4X4 spare for those years but does for the earlier trucks. As many said a different size wheel could damage the diff or transfer case.

I have a 4X2 S-10 temp spare in my 1960. I have tried the wheel on my car and know it works. I have never tried to install it on my 1966.

Car-parts.com lists several S10 spare wheel / tires.
I searched :
1994 / Chevrolet S-10 / wheel (display with image) / California / Search
4x2, 16x4 (compact spare) / Search
Prices start at $75 but go as low as $20

Maybe pick up a 4X2 wheel for $20 and give it another shot?

Thanks Tommy - so I guess the lesson here is the 4x4 S10 spare cannot be used on a C1.

Got one from a junkyard with tire for $35.00 There are a couple of different styles...you really have to check the backspacing as well.

I don't have a spare tire tub anymore...so I just chained it down in the rear of the '66 and covered it with a blanket. Extra security on a 7000 mile road trip I took... but never needed it.

This is what I use T155-90-15. I am sure I mounted it a few years ago and it worked fine. About 26.50 in diameter which is very similar to my 215/70 15s. (26.90) Fits great in the carrier. $55.00 from a tire dealer.

I went to the junkyard and got a donut spare tire off a late model Chevy Biscayne. This was a brand new, never used tire and rim. Fits great on the front and back.

Cost $8.

Even though I have AAA it would be nice to use the donut to make the change and move on quickly. Plus, the donut gives you more room in the well vs a standard size for other stuff.

I test fitted my grandson's 97 S-10 2 wheel drive space saver spare and the center hole was too small. Not a new problem, rally wheels frequently have the same problem on my 60 FI metallic brake optioned Vette. Easily solved by using a metal scrapper often used in machine shop for deburring. It is actually a three sided file with the edges/corners ground sharp. Better to use small grinder. Had it fitting in about 15 minutes front and rear. Hang on to your spare for now until you determine a final solution. They are hard to find in my area
