Default 58 Trunk Floor

I am unsure of the correct side covering in the trunk floor area over the shackles/rear bumper brackets. My car would be "late" so I am sure I need the fiberglass side covers but do I also need something else like the metal covers for the "early" cars? My car was a total basketcase and I don't get to the shows that often to see the correct setups.

Are you talking about the holes at the rear of the trunk floor - which is a vertical surface?
If so - there are two round holes cut for clearance for the rear spring / shackle
Then those two holes are covered with a fiberglass concave piece which was glued over the hole - that provided the clearance
If you need a photo - please let me know - I have a 59 body on a dolly right now and I just repaired one side and the other side is untouched

I was lucky that my car came with one of the little fiberglass vertical shackle cover plates--so I molded one for the other side. It is the larger vertical open area around the bumper brackets. So far I believe I use the little fiberglass shackle covers, the fiberglass exhaust tunnels, the upper floor fiberglass side floor covers and is there anything else? Hope that makes sense?

I think the early 58 cars had an arrangement of a metal cover with a rubber reinforced pad that the "railroad style" bumper brackets protruded through in the truck area (I have the four body rubber bumper seals so not referring to these). Guessing the metal covers were not used on the later cars or they used nothing or they used something else? Am I making any sense?

thanks for quick reply Bill

My 58 is a late August model . It has flat fiberglass covers in the two corners. I could take pics or make patterns to send to you. With a pattern you could either make these out of metal or fiberglass.

Bll,
I think you are referring to this area:

You can see part of the bumper bracket under the plate. This was taken at Muscle Car City in Florida last year. The plates were held on by bolts and clutch head counter sunk screws. On my own 58, the plates are about 1/8" thick steel
Hope this helps

Original car from NCRS Regional in Kissimmee 2014.

Fiberglass covers screwed to trunk surface. The metal covers were used on early 58's

The rubber part was still used when they transitioned to the fiberglass cover.

My car doesn't have these plates, glass or metal, it's just open. Did they do away with them in 59?

I need to jump in here and ask the question .... were these panels installed to keep items from dropping down into the rear wells between the body side and trunk. I am familiar with the 53-55's which were open. Just curious.
thanks,
John

It looks neater to have plates over them, but it's nice to have that extra space, too. I keep jumper cables, tow straps, etc. in those cavities and they're out of the way. Every bit of real estate is valuable in a C1!

You folks are great! Thanks for the pictures. And, I suspect 59 and later did not use these. Bet it was a 58 only thing.

here are too photos of the 59 - sorry best I could do with the half moon in place
inside the "cover" covers the hole
From the back side you can see the hole and the concave shape of the fiberglass cover
This 59 was built in April
The gray is factory adhesive - the white is Glasin I added as it was starting to separate from the body (crack)

They changed the way the bumper bracket mounted in 59. No longer need to access the bolts from the top like in 58, thus they filled the access hole in the trunk area that was used to get to the bolts.

Tom and All, I get it now. The trunk floor glass fillers and I saw the rubber "58" seals on Corvette Central site. For some reason I just never noticed the seals before. Case closed. thanks
