Do you still have your old spring - which I assume sat too low? If so, you might be able to restore it (blast and paint) and substitute the bottom leaf from the new spring to the old spring and come up with a compromise spring that sits right. If sits too low with one new leaf - substitute the next one for one from the new spring.
Short of shaving material off of the differential case (which will weaken it) I can't think of any way to alter the mounting to improve this.
Take the spring to a spring shop and have them de-arch it.
Some people use long spring bolts on the ends of the spring. This reminds me of the days when guys used to flip their rear spring shackles upside down to raise the back of their car. Kinda' tacky looking with the long bolts.
have a stock 9 leaf going in, have the longer bolts, car still sits too high, can anything be done to lower the ride height? this is driving me crazy
Some good suggestions by Dan and Mike. Did you use stock rubber cushions for the spring?? Did you put the car back on its wheels and also weight down the car as needed/necessary to get the AIM factory suspension height dimension(s) BEFORE tightening the rear suspension and spring bolts?? If not, the rear will sit too high.
do u mean the bolts that attach the rear to the differential

I hadn't seen that or heard that mentioned since the mid-1960's. I agree it looked tacky. We always used Air Lifts or Gabriel/Delco/Monroe air shocks to raise the rear as needed.
And if you were LUCKY ENOUGH to own a MOPAR during this time (as I was) , you just had to adjust the torsion bars to raise up the front.

You must be elderly, like me!
If you were down on the bucks, you flipped the shackles. If you were in tall cotton, you bought the Gabriel High Jacker air shocks.
