Default Help! How do you remove steering column?

My steering wheel column on my 64 is loose and the horn was blowing every time I turned a corner. I noticed that the indentation on the right hand side of the lower column was missing a bolt. I bought a phillips head screw and it is about 80 percent of the way in but won't tighten. How can I take off the entire column? I have the steering wheel off and the piece that activates the horn (which now doesn't work). I'm down to the main bolt but I can't figure out how to remove the cylinder that has the turn signal lever and then the lower cylinder. Help!
Also, I noticed on the fuse box a row of empty areas on the right-hand side. Do fuses go there and what size should I buy?
Thanks.

MF64VETTE-
You need to get a shop manual! But here are the major steps.
1. Pull instrument panel harness from mast jacket lower switch. Disconnect switch from mast jacket.
2. Pry off horn cap. Remove steering wheel nut and washer from steering shaft.
3. Thread a wheel puller anchor screws into the threaded holes provided in the steering wheel hub. Turn the puller center screw against the steering shaft and pull the steering wheel off the shaft.
4. Remove the mast jacket escutcheon screws and mast jacket support u-bolt nuts.
5. Loosen mast jacket lower clamp at firewall.
6. Loosen lower spring stop clamp and slide stop and spring down on steering shaft.
7. Paint mark on steering shaft and coupling. Remove coupling upper clamp bolt.
8. Pull mast jacket and steering shaft assembly out of steering coupling and carefully withdraw out through dash panel, while sliding lower spring stop, spring, bearing and seat off lower shaft. After lower parts are pulled from the lower shaft, the shaft may be withdrawn from the mast jacked.

Now, do you see why you need a shop manual.

Disconnect the battery before you do this :) You can also pull the entire mast with the shaft inside. Just undo the retaining clamp on the firewall, and you should be able to pull the whole thing. You'll likely have to put the top down to get the whole thing out. You really need an AIM for your 64. I've done this several times, but I always have the AIM handy. Chuck
