Hey team I recently acquired a 1962 Vette and while the previous owner did a great job on the restoration I noticed the Speedometer is not working. In checking the connections the one of the transmission while tight at the not, I can actually move it around by wiggling the cable. I am thinking they either did not put a drive gear on it or they put the wrong one. I noticed on line that there is like three different size gears. So how do I know which one to use or am I looking considering the wrong cause for this problem. The cable appears to be brand new. As usual the serial number of the tranny is on the top where you can't see it to look it up. You have to love the X frame where you can't see squat.

You'll need to determine what gear ratio is in the rear end, then color match the speedo gear to it. There are several different colors. Be sure it has the correct number of teeth also. Have you pulled the coupler out that holds the gear?

I have not as it is very difficult to even get my hand up in there to unscrew the cable from the transmission. But I can give it a try. Also not to be a dumb ***, but how would I be able to tell the gear ratio of the rear end?

Mark and count the revolutions of/on drive line and one wheel....
Mark the drive line then mark the wheel...
Rotate wheel and count revolutions of drive line..
:::EDIT:::
You said the speedo doesn't work....you might not even have a driven/plastic gear in the trans ..
Could be one of 3 problems.
1. Faulty cable.
2. Speedo head
3. Broken, stripped or missing drive gear in tranny.
I would check drive gear, cable & speedo head in that order.
