Default Back From The Drags

Went to Thunder Valley today and ran the vette :) :) .

Here are my times.

1st T/T = 13.88 @ 106 MPH (Reaction Time .540) "needs some work"!
2nd T/T = 13.77 @ 105 MPH (Reaction Time .285)

First Elimination = Dial in time = 13.83 (average).
Race = 14.34 @ 101 mph
LOST!!!
The Track was really greasy after all the big boys ran. I watched the vidoe tape and it showed what I saw in my rear view mirror, Smoke all through first gear. I had fun though and the car really got alot of attention. Everyone lined the fence to see the car run.

I was running the car with the exhaust all hooked up, wish I had it open.
I was running 100LL avgas with the timming set at around 60 total. The car really ran good, there was more operator error. I am running some cheasy car radials and I think some decent tires would do better. Also I was launching at around 4000 RPM, wanted to be a little conservative since this was my first time with the vette at the drags.

I think if I had some better meats and was able to hook up things would have been a little better. All in all a real fun day.

By the way I have this on a Digital video, If I convert it to an MPEG will someone host it for me that has High speed internet, I have dial up.

Sounds like a real great time, I think those are pretty good numbers considering tire size. :yesnod:

I am almost ashamed but the tires are a set of BIG-O 205's. They have a white wall and everything. I like smoken' em off so I don't feel bad about doing it with a cheap tire, but the cheap tire has no place at the track.

ghostrider20,

Hey, that's some quick times and speed. Congrats!! All on street radials too! I know what you mean about hooking up. I'm poised to participate again in an annual muscle car event which takes place on the 13th & 14th of September. This is strictly a "run what ya brung" event limited to all muscle cars built between '55 and '75. Some of the restrictions are no sticky tires (all 4 tires have to be the factory same size...can be radials which actually hurt your times as well as no headers.

In a way going up in smoke saves your drivetrain...you know you're testing the weakest link doing this. I know that driver's error you mention. I call it a "user issue". What a blast doing this, eh? Glad you had a good time. The launch is where you'll win or lose. Practice, practice, practice.

It is a rush!!

Early in the events the track was not covered in rubber but after the pro-trophy and mod guys went, and well you can guess. There were about 10 front engine dragsters there. I thought those were outlawed. I guess they have a classical class for them. It was neat seeing them. They ran street trophy (the class I ran in) elimination’s last, so the track was pretty slick by then. I did 2 burn outs to warm the tires up and I don’t think it was enough. I had fun and brought the car home in one piece so I am thrilled.

I was running 100LL avgas with the timming set at around 60 total.
WHAT?????

The total WOT timing is initial plus full centrifugal. It DOES NOT include vacuum advance as there is no vacuum advance at WOT. Can you confirm what your real total timing was.

Excellent MPH. The best I ever got out of my '63 was about 102, but the 3.08 gears might have had some negative effect.

Refresh my memory on your axle ratio. 4.11:1?

Sorry for the confusion Dukester, I was still on the high for the day.

The total timming at 2350 RPM is 60 degrees WITH the vacuum hooked up.

I have checked the independent variables of the assembly.

- 20 degrees of vacuum advance.
- 24 degrees of centrifugal advance.
- and normally 12 degrees of base timming.
For a total of = 56 degrees.
or a WOT of 44 degrees.

I jacked the base to 16 degrees advanced and had no detenation with 100% avgas. With the SHP cam the car seems to really like this setting.
The caveat is that it must be paired with 100% avgas. My 12 degree setting has no detenation with my 50/50 mix of premium 92 octane and 100LL. I know all detenation is not audible so at the point I can faintly hear the ping I back it off 4 degrees to compensate on the safe side. I have no scientific data to prove this will compensate for ALL the detenation.

Yes I am running the 4:11 rear end with the close ratio muncie. I could have run the entire 1/4 mile with out shifting into 4rth gear. I shifted into 4rth about 100 feet before the end. I figured if I had stayed in 3rd I would have crossed the trap at 7000 RPM. I shifted at 6500 rpm.

I wanted my dad to run it down the track but he is still a little slow after he has under went his prostate surgery last month. He was there and running the cam corder though. After each run the first thing out of his mouth was "The light don't get any greener", "go on the last yellow"! It has been a few years since I raced my chevelle.

QUOTE
[.........HELL I WAS IN FOURTH AT ABOUT THE HALF MILE IN MY BIG ]

I dont know were you drag race but I have only been to one track in my life with my cars and it is the regulation 1/4 mile. So if it were a full mile yes I would be well into forth and have had the engine blown by the end.

Well, with the 4.11 rear end it makes perfect sence.

I shift at the posted redline, 6500 RPM

Hear is how the math breaks down for each gear VS. RPM

1st gear
1000 rpm = 8.8 mph
2000 rpm = 17.7 mph
3000 rpm = 26.6 mph
4000 rpm = 33.5 mph
5000 rpm = 44.4 mph
6000 rpm = 53.3 mph
6500 rpm = 57.7 mph

2nd gear
1000 - 11.9
2000 - 23.8
3000 - 35.7
4000 - 47.6
5000 - 59.8
6000 - 71.5
6500 - 77.5

3rd gear
1000 - 15.26
2000 - 30.5
3000 - 45.8
4000 - 61
5000 - 76.3
6000 - 91.6
6500 - 99.24 (NOTE RPM AND POSTED MPH FINISH TIME)

4th gear
1000 - 19.5
2000 - 39
3000 - 58.6
4000 - 78.2
5000 - 97.7
6000 - 113
6500 - 125

Hear is the RPM and MPH latter based on a 6500 RPM shift.

1st gear =1000 RPM to 6500 RPM =57.7MPH.
2nd gear = 4900 RPM (58 mph) to 6500 RPM = 77.5 MPH
3rd gear = 5050 RPM (77 MPH) to 6500 RPM = 99.2 MPH
4th gear = 5100 RPM (99 MPH) to 5300 RPM (finish around 105 mph)

There is the break down for you, and my graphing calculator is smoking so I hope this help you understand. For the last 1 second of the race leaving the car in 3rd gear would have run it to around 6900 RPM. I hadd a roller motor (327) in my 67 chevelle, and I shifted that car at 8200 RPM. Never had a problem, stock crank and pistons.

SWC, L-76, CR four-speed, 3.08 axle - I shifted into second gear half way down and went through the lights at 6500 in second - 'bout 102. Glad they didn't tell us our 60' times back in the sixties. ;)
