Went to install my belts today and noticed the alternator needs to be shimmed out about 1/2-5/8 of an inch to line up with the crank pulley. Is this normal?
All correct numbered parts for a 67 BB with PS. This is a new build.
Bill, Sorry! I meant to say the Alternator Pulley will not line up with the PS pulley without a shim. The PS pulley Will line up with the water pump pulley.
That is it exactly. You don't have the correct alternator pulley for a BB car with power steering. The inner PS pump pulley groove should be aligned with the forward (outer) groove on the water pump pulley. It appears to be correct in your picture. The inner groove on the water pump and crank pulleys is for a separate belt. Make sure you get the correct belt; I had one from Corvette Central that was a bit too short and was under too much tension when installed. It eventually broke my water pump pulley. A replacement belt from Paragon was a bit looser and has worked without incident for the last 12 years.
Note that there are two different diameter alternator pulleys; one for high horsepower cars (425/435 HP) and a smaller diameter one for 390/400 HP cars.
You also seem to be missing a reinforcement strap that bolts on top of the block end of the alternator mounting bracket. You need that strap or the bolt for the alternator bracket will break from time to time.
Thanks! You guys nailed it. Just ordered it. I did know about the reinforcement strap. Thought I ordered it a while back but cant find it? Been gathering parts for this project for a few years now. Converting from the original small block. Finally coming up to the finish line.
Also, this brace does not go to the bolt that you have it on. The part the vendors sell is not correct (Paragon 1023 for example) and will only fit the way you have it.
According to the AIM, The brace should attach to a stud that is in the upper drivers side bolt hole for the water pump, the other arrow in the pic. I used Paragon part 2116 that is listed for a 70-74 454 car. It is slightly longer and reaches the correct water pump mount hole.

Thank you for pointing that out. I'll need to look into that. This transition has been big a learning curve for me.

I'm not sure that's right. I think the way the OP has the brace mounted is correct. The water pump stud is used for the alternator bracket on non power steering cars; the stud only holds the water pump on PS cars. Check the RPO L-71 section of your AIM. The stud comes with the motor and installed water pump whether or not the car has PS.

I stand corrected, I must be confusing it with the 69 that I restored. Here is the N40 page of the AIM for a L36 car that does show the bracket installed like the picture in the OP.
But it does appear that the brace, Part 7 in the AIM diagram, 3878240 is also missing. I think Avispa also mentioned that above.
