Lack of C1s at car shows

Burning Brakes
We have a lot of tourists who attend our car events, and many appreciate the older vettes. One very attractive blonde lady was all over my 57, commenting about the gorgeous design, etc, etc. She asked me very politely if she could sit in it, and in a moment of temporary insanity, I said "sure". Well, my wife tuned in to this, gave me a swat and in a LOUD voice said, "you NEVER let anyone sit in that car!" I attempted to backpedal with no success, while my friends chimed in after seeing the blood in the water. "Wow! I never would have allowed that!" quipped one, followed by, "nice knowing you", followed by nervous laughter. I was threatened with bodily harm if my car had any scent of a new female!
This happened several years back, and I am still reminded of it at times. . Since I was spared from being cut up into fish bait, I no longer allow visitors in my ride!

That's a really funny story vettepoor!
Vacationed on Maui many times.. it's my favorite place on earth!
For me, it's totally different of someone ASKS to sit in the car.. I would allow it (although it's never actually happened!)

Sadly, in Central Florida, the crowd itself is an incentive to stay home. Disrespectful of the cars, no appreciation of their history and dismissive of the vehicle owners.
My last visit to Old Town after I shooed a herd of Latino kids off my car after nearly every one of the 1/2 dozen had leaned on the doors, rubbed their sticky hands on the paint and hovered around the car with hard-edged toys in their hands; their azzhat Mother said (in heavily accented English), "....if you don't want people to touch your car; perhaps you shouldn't bring it here".
Yeah that attitude...

I've been going to Maui annually for 30+ years. Got married on the beach on Maui 20 years ago. We go back every year. My wife says it's celebrating our anniversary. I say it's returning to the scene of the crime.

I admit I have more than my share of trophies. So I often ask myself,"why am I here?". I am tired of kids that have no respect for other people's property and parents that are too lazy to discipline their children. I'm pissed at "judges" that don't have a clue about Corvettes, or car shows that lump '53-'67 Vettes into one judging category. The C-1 herd is getting thin and aside from the NCRS, I'm not sure the general public nor car shows care or respect the C1 or its owners. Just my .02

I have always gotten a lot of attention and respect at cruises in the Saint Louis area.
The only place I see lack of attention is all Corvette shows.
It seems like street rod, classic car and muscle car guys care about other cars and love to talk.
The newer Corvette guys are into their own car only.

Right after the C7 was released, I was parked next to a guy who had one at a all-corvette show. It obviously drew a lot of attention as many people had not seen one in-person yet. The funniest part was listening to the owner brag about the "mods" he had done to the car. By "mods", he meant changing the color of the bulbs in the running lights.

Happy anniversary. We got married in Wailea. Spent a week there with all the family. When they left, we went to the Big Island for a week and then Kauai for another week for the honeymoon. The islands are by far the best place on earth.

I take my 55 to local curze nite every Fri except first fri which is a downtown show. Not there for anything except to answer questions. Never had any problems and once in a while I invite a pretty girl(ok some times a appreciative youngster) who shows interest to sit and have a picture taken.

I took my 1954 to Ruby's Cruise Night last Friday. Amazing how many people have no idea the first Corvettes came with a six cylinder engine and a cast iron powerglide. Some wanted to know how hard it was to shave the door handles. LOL

C2 of Year Finalist (stock) 2019
Perhaps this is inevitable but there seems to be very few C1s at car shows these days. We have a "Weekend of Wheels" in Grand Rapids, MN
every July. There are two fairly large shows, one Saturday and one Sunday. Each has over 200 cars. That's pretty good for rural Minnesota. Last year I took a first place in the Corvette Class (1953 to 2000) with my '57. There were several C2s and C3s along with many C5s - C7s even though the newest ones were there for show only, no judging. I didn't enter this year due to health reasons.
This year there was only one C1, a 1959 that had belonged to a guy killed in the Vietnam war. His brother rescued it after it has been sold a few times and had restored it. There was a nice write up about it on display.
Where are all the C1s? Sitting in garages collecting dust?

I've been following this thread and I keep thinking that all of the comments, including the original post, are also applicable to C2s. I am usually the only one at a show with my C2 and though I do like winning a trophy that I don't have to compete for, it really isn't fun anymore. A couple of weeks ago I pulled into a small local show where there were about 10 C6 and C7s and no C1s, C2s or C3s. Half of the Corvette owners came up and asked me what year my car was. I think that was when I decided to sell - cheap plug, see car for sale on this Forum

I had been thinking of selling all season as I wasn't enjoying sitting at shows and baking anymore. The lack of others with similar interests at these shows (early Corvettes) was just another factor as people just don't seem to bring them anymore. That was just the point in time I decided to sell - not just because I was the only C2.

Drifting
Years ago my thrills were getting my fuelie ready for a show bringing home a few plastic trophies, 25 years later "present day" I just enjoy keeping her looking and performing well. a bi-weekly two hour cruise through town keeps the fire burning. Still go to all the shows (without showing car), guess I just don't need the politics anymore. When some of us grow older they realize personal satisfaction is far more important then the general popularly contest.
Just my two cents...
