Default Extra Number in Suffix code..

Trying to help a guy out on the TriFive forum, He has a 3970010 block with an V04305WD Stamp.

The 3970010 is supposed to be either a 68 327 or 69-79 350 engine, but the WD says either a 1967 283 or 1968 307, none of which makes sense, especially the "extra" 5. The V is Flint of course and I assume the 0430 is April 30th, but unsure about the "5".

It has some other stamping but they appear to me to be from an engine rebuilder or something, not anything factory. Not an high dollar motor... just a guy trying to figure out what he has. Anyone with any insight?

There are many Chevy engine codes that start with a digit.

I suspect that the engine code is 5WD.

Those sort of codes were generally used for marine applications or other vehicle manufacturers that used Chevy engines such as Checker, Avanti II, Studebaker, Holden (GM - Australia), etc.

Normal Chevy vehicle engine codes were two characters until 1970, but these other applications (listed above) used 3 characters (and many started with a digit) as early as 1968 (and perhaps earlier than that).

I think I read the following on this engine pad..

A11-5 1717 V04035WD C 6 5
