Default Antenna mast removal 1960

I can't figure out how to remove the mast from the base. When I want to put the car up on the lift I have to remove the big nut and drop the whole antenna into the trunk. It's a pain. There are no flats on the mast for a wrench and I don't want to put vice grips on it. I don't know if it's the original antenna so I included a pic.
Thanks
Mike

That is not correct for 1960. It should have a plastic nut.

I don't believe you can remove the mast easily.
1967 Corvettes have mast that unscrews from the base.
C1 Corvettes do not

That's a replacement antenna.

A correct style antenna will fold down lower than the highest point on the car (top) Pilot Dan

Here's the antenna on my 1962 retracted to its lowest height. As Dan said, it's well below the level of the top:

Thanks all. I suspected it might be non-original. I'll have to figure something out.
Thanks

These are photos of what I believe to be my original 1960 antenna. Hope this helps.
