Hi. My '63 has two circles of vinyl covering the spots where the aircon controls go if optioned. Is that normal for a '63 or has someone removed the two top controls and patched the holes way back in the past? They're hard to see but you may just spot them in the attached photo. Grateful for advice!
'63 factory air cars are rare and I mean rare (less than 250 IIRC) you would be a lucky man to have found one. Do you have a center A/C vent above the clock, or, possibly a covered up rectangular hole for one, as, show in this AIM page.
I would remove the glove box and start poking around back there behind the center console and do some detective work...

Thank you so much for taking time to respond Sir, and with such a comprehensive answer; I really am very grateful.
The marks are certainly feint and there is no sign of the vent being covered, so I shall do some detective work as you advise.
The marks are pretty much exactly where the controls would be so I wondered (as someone who is not an expert on the '63) if the factory left the blanks for the option - you may think that's an odd concept since you're used to well-finished motor cars but in England in the '60s that sort of thing was not uncommon!

Non of this sounds good. Could be a car built from available parts. If it was a factory A/C car, why would someone remove/deactivate the system and parts? Detective workand additional pics should tell the story. Dennis
This is my May '63 original dash removed from my coupe; its a non AC car and as you can see there are no holes for an A/C vent or control ***** and no patched vinyl on the front.... To my knowledge the factory did not make any holes in the dash for non-A/C cars.
You could possibly have a dash from a later midyear where A/C was much more common and it somehow got installed in your car and an attempt was made to cover up the dash holes. Prob most likely scenario...
It'll be interesting to see what you discover...

Those marks are way to low for A/C holes, someone drilled holes for switches and filled them in and painted them. Happened all the time, I have a few dash panels with extra holes.

I kind of thought so too but the AIM isn't always precise and 63 air cars are so rare I have no pictures to compare to. I would still check behind the piece for the air duct hole just out of curiosity - takes 10 minutes..
