Default 66 - alternator bracket

can't figure this one out - there is a stud coming out of the power steering pump...and one that also acts as the final exh manifold bolt/stud - if i put it one first ... can't get it on the other - and vice versa

is there some trick position to get this to go on both studs?

thanks!

I don't have PS but on my '66 427 there are no studs only bolts holding the alternator bracket on.

If I understand your question correctly, from memory you install the stud then the mount and finally the nut.

thanks chris

to be clear:

on the exh mani, this is a 2 way stud with a nut like section in the middle - so one end screws into the EM and the the other end is available as a stud for one end of the alternator bracket

then there is another stud on the ps pump

with this in mind, you are saying install the EM stud, then the "mount" (what is the mount?) - and then the nut that goes on which stud? the EM stud or the PS stud?

sorry for being confused...

1 . Screw the stud into the manifold.

2. Attach the "mount" it's actually the alternator bracket with the adjustable slot.

3. finally install the nut.

Hope this is clearer.

definitely clearer

this is what i tried the first time: put the mount's adjustable slot on the PS stud - but try as i might, i could not get it to reach the top of the stud (already then screwed into the EM)

if that is indeed the right, i'll try again...

maybe a silly question... but if it has a removable stud that you are trying to 'stretch' over; why not use a bolt to start with, nothing to stretch over?

not silly at all Bill - i thought of that - the stud coming out of the ps pump has a hex built into it (as does the special EM bolt for this one of eight bolts) - I am not sure what is on the other side of the PS bolt and that is the reason i have not taken it out - if I did, i'd have to stick one end from the inside out of the bracket and then thread it from the nut down into the PS pump...could be a solution ... i thought of it, but didn't want ps fluid to come gushing out......

Looking at the AIM, it looks like you need to put the pump bracket on the pump...put the other brackets on the block and then put/attach the pump to block and upper brackets...

i'll take a look at the aim again...that would be few good bits of deconstruction to reconstruct...but maybe that is the answer

It's been awhile since I had mine apart, but I believe there is an o-ring or a gasket on the back side. So yes, I would anticipate spillage.

...plus it won't come out, just loosens up and fluid runs out...

I'm trying to envision how the stud on the back of the power steering pump on a big block engine would be in any way connected to the mounting of the alternator. Picture below is my small block pump and as you can see, the stud needs to move in the bracket to put tension on the power steering pump belt.

Someone........please enlighten me.

66jack...your words are pretty clear, but hope dies slowly - that ps stud cannot be removed all the way out of the ps pump?
