Default Starburst MIA

Took my dog for a ride this morning. Stopped at a park and when I was getting back into the car, I noticed the starburst was missing from my back right wheel. Retraced my route but couldn't find it.

Zip wants $221 plus shipping for the starburst and all the required bits and pieces that go with it. Does anyone know a better place to buy one. I didn't see anything better on eBay.

Thanks,
Steve

Can't help you on finding a 'cheaper' vendor...

Depending on the route and distance you took/drove I would take a walk and look further out than just along side the road...fog/white line...

Steve:

Maybe someone can find a used one cheap at Carlisle for you. I assume you only need the reproduction one. Probably say "Made in Korea" on the backside?? I would think you could find a used one for $75 or so.

NOS originals go for about 2X the Zip quote. And the NOS ones in boxes are actually the "second design" ones.

I have reproductions on my car now, but purchased mint used originals from David Cosner at Bloomington MANY years ago. I can still remember being out in the rain going thru the large storage box of starbursts he had picking out the four best ones.....and the hassle I had carrying them aboard the plane at O'Hare. I was not going to put them in my regular luggage. Originals used special heat treated blackened clips to hold them on to the wheel. Reproductions do not use these clips, and I find these clips will loosen up after removing and installing. I always use a pliers and feeler gage and reset the gap in the clips at 0.10 inch before installing back on the wheel. Then I use a rubber hammer and put them on very tight and solid. You may need to do something similar to the other starbursts you have on the car before they all come off.

Larry

I totally agree with "Powershift" above. Also, to minimize them flinging off, I had my tires matched balanced. Anything to lessen the vibration which could eventually cause them to fly off. I lost one on Hwy 101 near San Francisco years ago. I could hear it fly off and saw the direction it went into the tall grass along side the freeway. I went back to the same location and searched for about an hour and half but could never find it. I did find $40 though, which went toward purchasing a replacement which at that time was about $125.

Are you sure it "fell" off all by it self..................? Car was parked, you were away from it for a while............

A friend of mine had two starbursts on the same/passenger side stolen from his repro wheels while he was out; didn't notice it until the next day at home.

Thanks, Robert. Anne and I are going out to look later in the SUV which is higher off the ground and provides a better view. The suspect area is between my house and Harris Oil down on 441 where I stopped for gas. Lots of construction and rough road surface in that area.

I cut over near your neighborhood towards downtown Mt Dora after getting gas so keep your eyes pealed as you drive around.

What's a "starburst"? A hubcap decoration? Which year(s)?

Spent the afternoon retracing my route. No luck. By now, it probably has a gold chain on it and is hanging around some thug's neck.

If I have to buy a new one, are there more than one company making these wheels and starbursts and, if so, are they interchangeable. Mine is a repro. The wheel says Western KH on the back.

Thanks, everyone, for your help. I'm taking the advice and checking my other 3 to make sure they are secure. I'm also going to put my phone number on the backside of all of them. Perhaps a kind soul would return them if I lose another one.

Wish I could blame it on someone else but I was in full sight of my car the entire time I was out of it so the buck stops with me.

A couple of the spokes look bent (probably flew off someone's car <LOL>). Anyone ever try to bend a bend starburst spoke back in place?

As I said earlier, you gotta love this forum.

It's name by which the finned center cap for the optional 1967 "bolt-on" aluminum wheel is known.
