Default State inspection sticker as "Paperwork"

When I bought my'67 coupe in 1987, it had a 1986 Texas state inspection sticker on the windshield. It has the usual "86" and verbiage on the front. The back has some hand-written information, which includes the full VIN (which matches the car). It is staring to show a little deterioration. It seems to me that this documents the car back to 1986, and therefore should be preserved. Is it worth making a concerted effort to save, and does anybody have an idea of what I can do with it? It is very firmly attached to the windshield. (I have no other paperwork for the car.)

EVERY piece of paper related to a car's history is a treasure. Perhaps a hair dryer and very careful lifting/peeling of the sticker would get it off....then preserve it in an acid free photo album sleeve out of direct light. One member is running around here with a NIXON/AGNEW sticker on his '63 bumper - I think its cool as all get out!

Another has a former owner's fighter pilot base sticker on the windshield (Jackfit IIRC) -- also cool as hell...

The alternative is to just leave it on the car (as the folks above have done) and avoid getting window cleaner and other chemicals on it...

In Pa when you scrape them off it comes up VOID on the sticker. Hair dryer it and a new blade will work but not sure on something that old. It may be better just to keep it on the car.

I would leave it. In Virginia, people would transplant a good inspection sticker from one car to another that had everything in the world wrong with it so they could drive it.

Soooo---the stickers were made to tear to shreds if you tried to remove them -- that was 30 years ago when I lived there and I assume its still the same. Stickers to get on the Navy base were the same way. I have gotten some off intact (* GRIN *), but its tedious.

I have the same Texas sticker on my 67 390/AC conv. but it's from 1987. I bought mine in 88. I will never take it off.

Yea, I scraped of those off Pa. windshields. I don't think it's possible to remove one without screwing it up.

I just looked, my 67 has a mint one on the windshield.

I would simply leave it in place. It's a part of the car's history.

It goes without saying, but if you decide to attempt removal, take several good photos of it first.

I don't think I would try to remove it; as I said originally, it's really on there. It's fading and the edges are getting a little ragged. I was thinking some kind of transparent coating, or maybe some transparent backing. "Bill32", yours looks a bit better than mine; did you do anything special? After I first got the car, I probably wan't as careful cleaning the inside of the windows as I should have been. Who knew?

Two and a half years ago VA stickers were as you remember. When Safelite replaced my windshield they used some type of Elfin Magc and transferred the sticker in tact.

Base access stickers were "the same, but different."

It's just a tax stamp, no real value.

No, not really. I pulled the windshield in 1986, it's been laying on the bed in my guest room ever since.

So, it hasn't been in the sun and there's no humidity here.

Might put it back in this year.

Just so you PA guys know, you can buy REAL , not fake inspection sticker for the year you want at flea market/car shows and on line. I think you probably can find them for most states. I go to the Hamburg show which is right near Cabelas and an older couple have a lot of them. I see another guy has them on line . I really am not sure if they are worth anything to the history of the car after thinking about this . When you write out a sticker in PA you have an inspection book, check boxes in book and sign back of sticker with Vin# and mileage. Books are kept for 2 years because cars are inspected once a year in PA. With a sticker bought at a swap meet you can do the same thing. They are already weathered from sitting around.

I just googled it and ebay has all you want. Just fill in the back.

It's always nice to have all information on your cars history. On my 62 I have very little. On my wife's 79 Camaro Z28 I have quite a bit. I didn't have an inspection sticker and friend found this web site where you can get inspection sticker for most years and states. Now I have an appropriate Missouri 1977-79 sticker along with the sticker having my YOM license number printed on the facing and then on the back hand written correct local Missouri inspection station.
https://inspectionsticker.net/
I also had him make other special stickers.

Here's my 1972 smog inspection "Exempt" sticker, from back before legislation was passed exempting all pre '75 cars.

I like leaving the neater ones on the car. The Texas sticker expired in '89.

It might be worth knowing what the law says about expired or overdate stickers. I believe in some states the old sticker must be removed.

I take it you very seldom have overnight guests!

Priorities---a 67 windshield---or an overnite guest?

It means absolutely NOTHING and would be the first thing I removed and discarded.
