Default Overheating question

I've read all the history and still have a question.
Car runs at 180 degrees or less until sitting still.
Everything is stock and shroud is in place.
It goes to 220 when sitting. Will a better fan help?
It's $50 for a fan or $750 for a radiator.
I read one case where a guy said the fan solved the problem.
Any body else have luck with a better fan?

What fan do you have on there now? What's your setup? How long idling to go to 220?

Are you sure your FAN CLUTCH is working correctly?
Does the resistance you feel when you manually turn the fan increase when the motor is hot? It should. If it doesn't, there are past threads you can find to diagnose this.

Also, any gaps around the radiator need to be blocked off. If the air can take a shortcut around the radiator, it will!

If you re not into NCRS correct you might try using a distributor with a matched VAC . Measure the temperature of the exhaust manifold when it is sitting still at idle. If its over 700 *F retarded idle timing is a good suspect.

A good shroud and vacuum advance should control this.

Just throwing this out and not sure if it will help in this situation. If you Google high flow thermostats you will find a source for them. They flow considerably more than a regular thermostat. A thermostat has to be the biggest restriction in a cooling system - probably why high volume water pumps seldom do anything to help a cooling issue. If your engine and cooling system are otherwise in sound shape - it might be something worth trying for a small investment.

It would really help if you would give us the year and engine choice. You say it's "stock" but C1s have up to five different engine choices in any given model year with very different spark advance maps - some with and without a VAC - and cooling system setups - everything from a brass radiator and fixed fan to an aluminum radiator with a viscous fan clutch.

Without the above information anything is just a wild-*** guess.

It's a 60 230hp with a stock 4 blade fan.
I suppose excessive use of the clutch in traffic
would add to this problem.
I had trouble in two parades and thought that may have
been part of the problem. I don't do parades anymore.
Thanks,
Larry
