Default Timing Problem

I recently had to removed my distributor from my 65 coupe, 350. Prior to the removal, I marked the position of the base and rotor for quick reassembly. Today I attempted to install but it would not line up probably due to a slight movement of the crank during my flywheel torqueing. I pulled the engine around to TDC on #1 and reset the distributor. All plug wires were confirmed to be in proper position. Upon startup, the car was warmed up normally but when I checked the timing marks, they were pretty far advanced. Engine vacuum indicated 20". Turning the distributor in either direction would not restore the marks into view without the engine failing. Looking down on the distributor, the adjustment window is pointing forward and directly at the carb.

Do I need to reset the distributor? Did I miss a step somewhere?

Is the vacuum advance disconnected when reading the 20 degrees?? At what idle speed??

You should have an initial advance of about 10 degrees BTDC at 700 RPM idle speed with the vac advance hose disconnected and plugged.

You could also double check the dwell..........should be around 28-30 degrees dwell. RPM doesn't really matter for this.

Larry

EDIT: Engine assumed is a 1965 327/350 HP engine. If this is not correct, the initial advance number could be different.

Sounds like you missed by 1 tooth.

Very easy to miss a tooth as the ***'y rotates during the distributor drop onto the helical gear. Figure out which direction you need to move the rotor and you should be able to raise the distributor housing slightly, so as not to disconnect the oil pump drive, and 'walk' the rotor around one tooth..
