I recently had to removed my distributor from my 65 coupe, 350. Prior to the removal, I marked the position of the base and rotor for quick reassembly. Today I attempted to install but it would not line up probably due to a slight movement of the crank during my flywheel torqueing. I pulled the engine around to TDC on #1 and reset the distributor. All plug wires were confirmed to be in proper position. Upon startup, the car was warmed up normally but when I checked the timing marks, they were pretty far advanced. Engine vacuum indicated 20". Turning the distributor in either direction would not restore the marks into view without the engine failing. Looking down on the distributor, the adjustment window is pointing forward and directly at the carb.
Do I need to reset the distributor? Did I miss a step somewhere?
Very easy to miss a tooth as the ***'y rotates during the distributor drop onto the helical gear. Figure out which direction you need to move the rotor and you should be able to raise the distributor housing slightly, so as not to disconnect the oil pump drive, and 'walk' the rotor around one tooth..
