Default Rust help

Recently purchased a 65 that's been sitting since 1982. It has some surface rust in the usual places like the radiator shroud, top of the front X member, etc. I would like to clean off the rust without removing any remaining black paint as the car is unrestored. I was thinking of using Navel Jelly, but it might be too aggressive. Also what to coat it with after to keep it looking good without the rust coming back. Any ideas or previous experience on how to tackle this problem would be greatly appreciated!

Try the Navel Jelly on a small area to see what it does. You could also scrub the rusty places with a green Scotchbrite pad and some Simple Green or Purple Power. Once you get the rust off touch up the areas with satin black spray paint to blend with the original paint. Good luck!

Ospho from Ace Hardware (or most anywhere) will stabilize the rust and turn it into iron phosphate, a black, hard substance which is paintable; applied sparingly it is prob as good as anything else you will find.

I agree with Frankie...use a rust converter product. First use a wire brush to remove any loose rust, clean and coat with the product. They usually want you to wait 24 hours before re-coating with any paint. Determine how much shine the frame presently has and you'll know whether to use a satin or semi gloss black for final tough up or blending.
