Default Swapping Out '63 Muncie for a '65

My '65 currently has a '63 Muncie M20 installed by the PO. I have a '65 Muncie M20 ready to install. Are the bell housing, Clutch/pressure plate and clutch fork the same and interchangeable with the '65 Muncie? Will the stock shifter require any additional parts? Thanks

No. The bellhousing hole for the '63 is smaller than for '64 and up. UNLESS you are not using a '63 Corvette Muncie or it has been reworked.

Measure the hole and the flange on the transmission before lifting up to see.

go look at this thread.

Tell us what bell housing casting number you have. If it ends ...421 (I think) then it is 63 and has the small bearing retainer and will not work with the 65. All else should interchange. Which "stock" shifter do you have? 63 or 64 up? 63 Muncie shifter should work, but I've not seen one. 63 BW would not. 65 obviously would.
My $0.02

If you need another bell housing, I have several, but you should be able to find them on the left coast easier. LMK>

Also, the 63 clutch fork is different from later years. What do you have?

I believe I have a '65 stock shifter and I assume the clutch fork is a 63. So I will more than likely need a bell housing and clutch fork for a '65. Would the clutch and pressure plate be the same or different?

Never assume on an old Corvette. The chances of them having been put together with dozens of mismatched parts is as good as them being all stock. This isn't a 1965 Cadillac that no one ever modified.

Everything should work except the bellhousing. It only will not work due to the big hole. I believe the holes are roughly 4-1/4 inches diameter and 4-11/16 inches, but don't remember for sure. The hole is essential as it maintains the alignment of the transmission, not the bolt holes. And of course, if you have the small hole and the big bearing flange, it won't go it.

1963 clutch fork is different as it has a pushrod that pokes through a hole in the end of a ball socket.

The 1964 and up uses a rod that has a pin that holds it.

Whatever you have is working and will continue, if your are only looking for function.

If you are looking for originality, then you need to make the parts look right.

Thanks for the photos and great info Doc. I currently have a 403 bell housing and the '64 and later clutch fork as your photo describes. This car is kind of a piece together and the great help and knowledge here by everyone is always appreciated!

If you have a 403 bellhousing, and an unmodified 63 transmission, you must have had one hell of a vibration. It would be interesting to know the diameter of the front input shaft flange. I bet it has been changed to the larger diameter.

I really wouldn't doubt they did some jury rigging.
