Default Notching the Frame for wider tyres

Yes, I've 'searched' but couldn't find the info I'm looking for. So If someone could lead this blind old man it would be appreciated.

I'm trying to stuff 275s into the wheel-well of my '64. With the off-set trailing arms and a 1/4 inch spacer, they fit but I'd like to get them back away from the fender lips a tad more. I want to toss the spacers. I'm thinking 17 inch rims will solve the spring issue but the frame interferes with the tyre at the top.

Was wondering if there were any measurements out there that would direct me to be able to 'notch' the frame to match in with the off-set trailing arms.

Shoot a note to Steve Barker- 632C2......he's got 275/60's under his stock fenders. He made some frame mods and will be glad to tell you how he did it.

Thanks Jim. I've just done what you suggested. I'm on the downhill part of a 3 year restoration and need advice quite often.

Your opening post ain't much help to help you without rim width and backspace! I flush cut the suspension travel bumper flush to the frame and due to being lowered, I have a modified minimum bumper of about a 1/4 inch of cushioning material! After continuously welding the frame rails, I grounded and smoothed those, so I have nothing that can cut a tire if it made contact! I had to shorten my sway bar in addition to the former use of offset arms and I wasn't running any parking brakes to worry about prior to moving to a 5 link without halfshaft (changed to retractable jeep units)!

No, I don't want to pack that much rubber!

Gee, I bought the rims and tyres some 3 years ago, I can't remember the exact backspace. Age is creeping up on me! So maybe there's not a set procedure to do this mod. Just cut it to suit your car and weld her up again?!?!

Thanks for the insights.

Bud.
