which condenser? The one inside the distributor prevents premature burning of the ignition points.

Its hard to discuss the condensor without talking about the whole theory of the ignition circuitry...this guide lays it out fairly simply:

That's what I get for giving it a cursory read dammit. I have JohnZ's article called "It Starts With a Spark" somewhere but can't find it. Maybe some other member has it.

Doesn't matter. Condenser across points suppresses the voltage spike (and arc) that would otherwise jump across the points when they open.

Radio noise was handled primarily by the metal shielding on small blocks and the grounded metal sheath of the ignition wires on BB cars.
