So it looks to me that the steering wheel is a C1, yet it has knock offs? Am I wrong? I guess that I have never seen a C1 have knock offs before.

Well the 'solid axles' are clearly shown laid out beside the rear center member so, yes, its a solid axle C1 and there have also been some pics on here of such early cars with faux knock off wheels...not remotely correct but some like the look...

As bad as it is, this car has a good steering column with VIN tag attached, a frame that matches the VIN, and a clear title.

Someone can do a lot with that.

I agree... they can buy it, steal your car, swap VINs, and register it with the paperwork off the wreck.
Appears to me to be the only reason to bid.

That's a good one Frankie!

As far as matching numbers are concerned that car, if insured, would (legitimately) still have to be registered with a "salvage title" which, would devalue it greatly, matching numbers or not.

I'd guess the title if clear would be worth that if you had one built from a pile of parts at home that needed one.

There are legal reasons for this as well.

Someone could rebody the car using aftermarket panels and still have an original VIN tagged car.

Totally legal, happens all of the time with other makes.

It's up to $1,300. That's just amazing.

It's also a statement about what a real VIN plate and Trim Tag are worth.

A few people think they can come out whole with this car. What am I missing?

When I lived in Philly it was known as plating.

Step 1: Steal a car.

Step 2: Buy a scraped car of the same year and model

Step 3: Move the scrapped VIN plate to the stolen car.

Step 4: Make a huge profit.

Depends on what they are starting with.

The automatic assumption that this can only involve a stolen car is incorrect. There are other reasons this could happen, most of questionable legality.

i agree, agreed value classic car policy's are cheap too. I bought my C1, put it in the trailer, and called Hagerty before I even pulled away. That car was going to be insured before it even moved 5 feet in an enclosed trailer. I can't remember the exact amount off the top of my head but I pay less than $300/year for an agreed value of $40k. That's a good deal to me.

I looked at the pictures and how many people do you think are bidding just for the vin plate and title. Some stolen car may have a title soon.

I wrote down the vin, later I'm going to go on the C1 registry and put in destroyed by fire or something. There are always post by people on the forum asking how many of something are left. If I see a car like this I want to add it to the registry with a note other wise no one will ever know what happened to it. Could be someone looking for their first car or something and now the vin is in the registry.

If the car wasn't insured as the owner says he can sell it with a clean title. There will be no salvage title since there will be no record of the fire.

This is a beautiful arrangement for plating.

If they do they do. Atleast it's one more car in the registry then.
