We removed the windshield from my 65 convertible today. The gasket was real bad, and the glass has slight wiper marks and scratches . A friend with a glass shop has offered me a good deal on replacement and I will let him do it. I'm going to have to install new clips for the SS trim.
He can get clear or tinted, but he said the tinted is green! Have any of you seen these? I like the idea of tinted, but if it really looks green, I can't see that on my red car.
Regarding the clips, I have read on the Forum that the replacement clips are poor second bests. I have removed my windshield in preparation for painting and fortunately, only a couple clips need to be replaced. DUB, a pro on this and the Paint and Body forum, recommends placing the clips and trim to check the fit prior to placing the window. I'm not there yet but wanted to pass it along. Regarding the window, I'm sure others can give you advise on a glass vendor. I have read some posts that the replacement glass is thinner than OEM.
One more thought--If the clips are rusted, so is likely the birdcage. When I took out the windshield of my '64, which has been a California car, there were a couple of surface rust areas in the frame which the windshield sits. I cleaned off all of the primer and rust followed by a coating of epoxy primer to seal the metal. Just my $.02.
I bought my new tinted windshield from Pilkington. The green tined area is only a few inches at the very top edge. My glass guy installed it with a new seal after I had installed the new clips. No problems re-installing the reveal moldings using the Paragon Reproduction clips but I did mask the paint and used brass shim stock to help the moldings onto the clips.
Thanks for the tip! My clips are pretty bad, most have rusted off. Does anyone recommend which vendor to use?
I suggest that you PM the aforementioned member DUB. He will have info on the best clip supplier that would be closest to stock but, don't expect to be able to acquire "exact" replacements. He's always been very helpful.
