Default '65 console paint/dye?

Hi, as long as the car is in winter mode, I want to paint/dye the shifter metal console. Is there a spray paint (red) for this project. I keep seeing dye for plastic. I'm reading that roughing up the surface/primer and taping it off is expected. What vendor do I use for red spray paint. Happy Holidays to All. Thx, Chuck
