Just wonder why GM went with that design for '67. I'm OK with them but they are prominent. I remember seeing a pre-production mock up where the corners were slightly rounded. Looked good.
Couple thoughts of mine:
GM wanted to have 4 stop lights (brighter) as opposed to only 2 stop when BU lights ordered.
Why didn't they put them on the lower valance?
Maybe they cleaned up things so much they felt a need for a little "surface entertainment" (Shinoda quote).
A lot of new Federal standards for automotive safety went into effect for the '67 model year. For example, collapsable steering columns came in, wood (teak) steering wheels went away, dual brake master cylinders were required, - and, higher intensity mandatory back up lights were required.
The '67 Corvette design reflected all of those issues - and more!
