I am restoring my center console on my 66. When using the paint remover, how careful do I have to be about getting it on the chrome areas? Does it typically damage the chrome or does it just attack the paint? Thank you.
It shouldn't hurt the chrome at all - but there are a lot of different stripper compounds out there so I guess caution is good. Just to be safe it wouldn't hurt to test it on the underside somewhere.
Unless the paint's REALLY screwed up, I don't see a reason to remove it.
I don't know if GM baked the paint on the consoles but they sis on the gauge clusters. And I don't remove that paint when I refinish one. That paint is adhered better to the chrome than anything that comes out of a rattle can.
When I do my cluster, I won't remove the paint. The most I'll do is hit it with some Automotive ScotchBrite.
Just to be safe and to prefect your taping/masking skills....mask off the
the chrome areas as you will be doing the masking again when you add the new color

Just to be safe.....no matter what you may hear, once you booger up that chrome - you're cluster face is done - appearance-wise...
From my experience, paint stripper won't harm the chrome at all - but when you get ready to repaint, you must use a self etching primer, as regular primer and finish coat won't stick. I had to do one of mine over and then saw John Hinckley's post on the subject. I use Duplicolor Self etching primer with excellent results.

A light coat of self-etching primer (I use SEM) will ensure excellent adhesion of your color coat. I also use it when restoring 65/66 wheel covers. On your console, you want to preserve the grain pattern, so just apply the primer sufficient to achieve full coverage. No need for a heavy coat.
Thanks for the tips guys. I will buy the self-etching primer. Paint has been removed and everything is cleaned up nice. I bought some automotive tape to make nice, crisp lines. This is going to make a big difference in my interior.
