Getting prepared to do a steering column install in a 1962. I have read the service manual and I'm trying to figure out why there is or might be, shims between the steering box spacer and frame. The service manual says take note of where the spacers are used but doesn't explain why they are used. When I received the car the column was out (and rebuilt) but no shims were given with the parts. I have included a picture from the manual. Any help would be appreciated.
