Default "Battery change fiasco on the 67"

So I noticed the battery on my '67' Conv. started showing signs of giving up the other day, slow cranking. So I did a load test and sure enough, she's getting ready to give up the ghost. After all, its sixteen years old. No problem, I purchase another battery, AC Delco series 24 as that's what came out of it and I've had good luck with Delco's in all my cars. Well, came to install it and the bracket that suppose to hold the bat down on the back side won't fit. Another words, looks like the batt is to big although it fits in the tray just fine except that the bracket won't fit into the indent at the bottom of the battery. Took the battery back to the shop where I bought it and they said all 24 series top post batts. are that dimension. Alternative is a different series with both top and side posts that would fit as it has a tapered lower body to them. Anyways, I said I'll just keep the battery and took back home and try to figure something out. Well, I pulled the battery tray out and set it on the bench, installed the battery and fabricated a hold down bracket that would fit. Took about four hours but it did come out pretty good and works. Just wondering if anybody else that has installed a new AC Delco lately has run into the same problem on a '67'. Don't know about how the pre-67's are held in. The new battery is 24 series 42 month.

Yeah, I swapped a Delco into my 63 to pick up some judging points and had to cut the handle off - the rep said it voided the warranty - which I can understand but I did it just the same...

I don't understand what handle your talking about. The battery came with a top carry handle strap that you take off anyway. The bracket I'm talking about is the small bracket that bolts to the tray. Its suppose to fit into an indent at the bottom side of the battery. This new battery has an indent but to high so the bracket will not fit and acts like the batts to wide. I'm wondering if Delco changed the design of the case on the 24's.

If so i think your using the wrong type of bracket... should be one like one of these....

You talking about this type of hold down brackets the first one in pictures?...

Sounds like your battery has a clamp that screws down against the base of the battery to hold it in place?

Yes, that's the correct bracket shown first in the google search link. It won't sit flush like its suppose to because the indent in the battery is not there. Its there but way to low.

Correct "MikeM", its screwed down to the base which I think is only unique to the '67'.

Any chance you need to flip that over so the mounting edge section is higher?

Just installed a new Delco series 24 battery in my 66 yesterday with no problem. No modification necessary, other than removing carrying strap.

As he said, the 67 uses a different mount with a bottom clamp like pictured in the Google link.

Yes sir, that's exactly what I have or I should say won't fit any more. I fabricated something similar to that will work. Don't mean to rant on but cheez, just a simple battery change that I've done hundred times turns into a nightmare. I hate jobs like that. Anybody that has a '67' knows that pulling a battery in and out ain't fun.

I see your problem now; you prob did the best thing you could fabricating a bracket mod...

I replaced the battery in my 67 327 last spring, got the battery from Autozone. Fit perfectly, and used the original clamp and screw.

I guess I could searched around and found a battery that would have worked but may have been a waste of time. Like Frankie says, probably better off with what I did. Thanks guys.
