Default C3 guy asking C2 wisdom

I'll tell you what I know so far, and ask that you give me a clue.
Going to look at a 64 Vert this Weds.
All I know is Riverside Red on Red
327/300HP
Auto/powerglide
No hard top or soft top
Numbers matching
Needs fresh paint, interior refresh, probably lots of details too.
He wants me to make an offer, and will not give me a figure at all.
What would be a good minimum, maximum?
I bet this will need $25,000 to make it nice. (My guess, no looking).

Does your $25,000 to fix account for a hardtop/soft top?

If not add around 3 or 4 grand +/- 500.00...

Way too many unknowns to give you any potential value guesstimates. Once you see the car, can you post more info and maybe pictures about the car? At that point, you will get better responses.

Does the car run? If not, when was the last time it was on the road?

What does a good, not cheap, total strip and paint job cost in Calif.? Then add incidentals such as: rechrome bumpers, new emblems, door handles, windshield trim restored, etc. to make that new paint job look better. That cost is going to eat big time into your 25k budget.
As Jack stated you will need a top, 3-4k. Will it need tires? If you are thinking radials from DiamondBack, another 1k. Interior refresh, anyone's guess. I have only mentioned items to make it look good (minus tires), now add items for mechanicals. Lots of unknown to give an accurate estimate. Proceed with caution as you can be upside down in a hurry.

Default 64

As long as it runs & drives & stops $25k might be ok
Be careful 64's are not the high price ones
you can buy a running low end C2 for 35K
i paid 39K last July for my nice 65 in my logo not perfect but nice
good luck

All good points. So, lets say 35K to fix it up. What would THEN be the value? I mean, can I safely give $8K, or is that upside down?
I have not one clue the value as is, but I have to have a max before I look at it.
Figure 10K paint
$5K interior
$7K engine and tranny
$5K top
$5K for unknowns/chrome/misc.

if you can buy a semi complete mid year for it buy it and run like hell. there is no way someone who hasn't been under a rock for the last 30 years would sell one for that

Knowing that in S.E. Michigan will not get you a very good paint job for 10k, I would think you would be light at 10k but I don't know what a quality strip and paint costs in Calif.

See post #3. However, if you can get it for $8k, which I highly doubt, buy it and haul it away immediately. But make sure you get a title, because at that price there is a good chance it's stolen!

You may be a little high on your interior and engine estimates, and a little low on paint and other details. Depending on what you want to end up with, it needs to be a pretty low price. You can buy a fairly ready 65 or 66 with at least one top for mid to upper 40's and a pretty nice one for 50-55K that doesn't need much of anything. You need to first verify the hard things to fix, birdcage, frame, previous body repairs, paint bubbles because of contaminates in the fiberglass.

I thought maybe you mis-typed and meant $18K. And that would be too low. A person could strip that car and part it out and beat your number...so I doubt you'll buy it for that. If you could then you almost can't get hurt no matter what your vision for it...

There really are just too many variables here to give a SWAG. If you could post even one picture, it would help tremendously. Otherwise, the range of recommendations for an offer price are going to range from $8k on the low end, to $25k on the upper end. If I were offering this car for sale, and making assumptions about its condition based on my interpretation of your description, I'd be expecting/offering in the mid $20k range.

As the others have said any estimate at this point is just a guess without pictures. Somewhere in the seller's head he has a bottom line of what he wants for the car. That's what you need to ask him. That's at least a starting point. If he won't give you a price he's just fishing. I would tell him your a serious buyer with the money on hand to buy the car. You're not looking to waste his time or yours but you need a figure do determine whether or not this is a candidate for possible purchase. If he insists he has no idea I would give him my number and tell him if and when you decide call me. I also think 25K will go real fast when refurbishing this car. When you're done you will have more money invested than if you bought a driver quality car to start with. Besides that is a power glide '64 your dream Corvette? At a realistic price this could be a great starting point but what's a realistic price when you budget what has to be done to be driving this car? Sometimes the best buy is the buy you don't make. Good luck going forward.

I can speak from experience on some of your budget estimates and I think that you are low on some. You are allocating $10,000 for paint. That might be OK if the car is perfect and just needs a mop and glow job. In California, if you have to strip the old paint, you will be lucky to find a decent job for $20,000. On my 65, the materials alone cost $6,000. Now I used good stuff, but it is something that you want to do once. The $7K for engine and tranny is fine if you do a lot of the work yourself. The $5K top will get you a soft top and install. The $5K for unknowns, chrome, and misc is probably too low. If you go to look at the car, bring a C2 guy along to look at the birdcage etc. California cars do rust in bad places that you can't see. Good luck, I hope you find a good C2.

Wow, the materials cost estimates for that shop are cheaper than Home Depot! For the good stuff, they list $300 in material cost. That will not buy a gallon of PPG primer. I wonder what system they use.

They have good, better and best paint jobs.

Even the best would fall short of some expectations but the price would fall way short. If you have the jingle to pay $20,000 for a paint job..............................:lurk :

How much are hamburgers out there on the coast? $35?
