Was the main purpose of the rev counter to allow you to do a manual RPM calculation over given time, like you might calculate average speed or miles per gallon over the same distance?

General aviation aircraft have a "Hobbs meter" that measures accumulated engine hours. Most airframe and engine maintenance and overhaul intervals are in hours, like the 100 hour inspection (or annual if less than 100 hours are accumulated) and engine TBOs are typically 1000-2000 hours.

The main purpose of the rev counter was to let a speedometer head to be used as a quick and dirty tachometer.
