Finding a car with a 13 digit VIN
Hopefully someone in CF land can help me. How do I go about trying to located a vehicle with a 13 digit VIN so that I can find out if the vehicle, by some chance, is still registered and on the road somewhere?
I have done the following already -
1) I contacted the National Insurance Crime Bereau (sp?), and I am still waiting for their response. Many years ago they helped me find a 1928 Essex previously owned by a great uncle, so I know their records go way back.
2) I stopped by my local police station, where I personally knew a couple of cops, and they ran a VIN check. It came up empty.
Does anyone have any other suggestions that I can try? Any help is appreciated.

Use this link:

If a current or historical registration record exists for this vehicle, the web site will tell you that. You then have to pay them to get the actual record(s). Cost is $4.95.
Note: You actually have to "hit" the search button twice to find out if a record exists (stupid software). Enter the VIN, hit the search button, and it will go off searching. It will then pop up another window that has your VIN in it. Hit the search button again and it will tell you if a record exists.
It will NOT give you any personal information (like the current owner), but it will tell you what state the vehicle is currently registered in.
Once you know what state the vehicle is registered in, start checking with local Corvette clubs in that state to see if someone can help you find it.

BTW, don't tell anyone the names of your cop friends that ran the VIN for you. They could possibly get in trouble and potentially lose their jobs.
