Long Tube Headers - 65 Convertable
My rebuilt small block for my 65 convertible will be done soon and I have purchased the Edelbrock hydraulic roller cam and related parts, heads, intake and EFI. I have a Tremic 5 speed for the car so all I need now is under car headers. I am going to get the Allen stainless chambered exhaust. Oh, I also have installed a new rack and pinion steering kit.
I am not familiar with headers so need some guidance. I talked to Edelbrock yesterday and was told that for their heads that I purchased they recommend 1 ¾ inch tube headers.
I would like to get long tube headers but have read that some hang too low underneath the car.
I would appreciate hearing from members who have long tube headers that fit well underneath the car and let me know what brand works well.
Thank you for your help.

Hitch, why against Allens Stainless Exhaust. I talked to Tony Allen yesterday about the chambered exhaust system, and I have read good reviews about them. Since no one is able to provide advice on the long tube headers I asked Tony which one he recommends. He said that the long tube header tubes stick out from the head and may interfere with the rack and pinion. He suggested using the headers that Jacks makes that look like the original ram horn exhaust header. He said that Jacks makes headers that are set up for the Allen exhaust systems. I will not have any R&P problems since they basically take the same route as a stock exhaust manifold.

On the Steeroids website there is a list of Corvette headers. Tells which ones need to be dented and which ones fit with no mods. Here it is. http://www.speeddirect.com/index.php...ader-clearance

I have a set of Allens in the attic because they sound like an old farm truck. I am running Headman long tube side exhaust headers and Give no Mercy side pipes and they sound much better

Saddletan, thank you for the link. Now I have something to study.
Hitch, thanks for your response. I do not want to put side pipes on the car as I already have hearing loss and tinnitus from the Army. I would like the exhaust to sound mellow but not really really loud.

I get that but the chamber exhaust sounds the same way.

Try AR HEaders....link to the right of this screen....
No flanges, and custom connection pipes.

ARH breaks out 68-72 and 73-82 and doesn't list 63-67 at all. I get it that C2 and C3 exhaust should be identical but ARH doesn't list any products for C2s. If their system fits 63-67 maybe they would sell more if they said that.
I'm in the market and like their product, I'll call them in the morning.

Thank you all for your input. I will be looking into the headers listed on the Header Clearance list that was provided.
What really concerns me is I have installed the Corvette Steroids power steering rack and pinion kit on the car and pictures I have seen show the u-joint shaft snaking between the header pipes. I would think that only certain designs for the tubes will allow that to be done.
That is why I am looking for someone who has the rack and pinion installed and found the brand and model of the long tube headers that work with the R & P. The McJacks rams horn type header will be out of the way of the u-joint shaft, so no problems there. From what I have read about the McJacks style shorty header vs long tube headers, the shorty headers don’t lose that much HP and are better for low RPM torque. I think I will call Speed direct today to see what long tube headers they recommend. I should have done that first.

I used Hedmans on my 66. Fit perfectly, and I think they're still made in California. I went with 2 and a half pipes all the way to the back with a 14 in. turbo muffler and custom dumps out the middle under the license plate. Sounded awesome when you stomped on it, but not loud for cruising.

You may want to consider Brzezinski ported manifolds. I just put a set on my 66 with vette Packs side exhaust and the difference was huge. I had them cermanic coated and they look awesome. I also used 2 1/2 inch mandrel bent pipe to the vette packs. I have the Steeroids and clearance is a non issue. Check my prior posts for some videos.

For what it is worth...I tried to put a Flaming River rack on my 73 (years ago) and couldn't get the steering shaft to clear the headers (Hedman long tubes)...sent it all back (good on them for taking it back) and went with a steeroids rack system and it fit..not sure if Flaming River's design has changed since then.
After all that drama and what I perceived to be a minimal advantage from the steeroids rack system, I went with a Borgeson kit on my 67 (Hedman side pipe headers) and was much happier...no drama...I'd do the Borgeson again...
