I'm thinking of putting my Matching # motor back in my car. Need a good machine shop located in either Northern New Jersey or Lower New York. Anyone know of a good shop?? I worked with Armin Hess he was the Guro of corvettes in the 60's and 70's. He did an engine for me for my 63 a few years back ,but has passed away a year ago this month. His knowledge was unbelievable.

I use a shop in Ct. hr. and 15min. from Tappan zee
reminder, do not let them touch your pad if it's original.....
tape it off, personally speak to every guy that is working in the shop, threaten with violence if need be.....

Better yet. Get it in writing and save the threats.
If Waterbury, CT isn't too far I got a great guy. Done a resto engine and a race engine for me. Carlquist Competition Engines. Great guy and very fair pricing.
Not for nothing, but when they deck the surface of the block and if they don't deck over the pad, doesn't it create an uneven surface where the head mates to the block? Or do they deck enough but not enough to encroach on the numbers on the pad and the head will still mate solidly?
I would recommend Center Auto Machine Shop in Stratford, Conn. 203-380-6008
Owner is Bryan Griswold. You can depend on them to do the right thing they know restoration work. They do all my BB and SB machine work, sometimes the assembly also. Been using them for years. They do it all in house.
Eddies Valve grinding in Sayreville, NJ. They do very good work and have been around forever.
Been around forever, rep is so so these days. Issues from some boat guys re head work. Any place is hit or miss depending on the current workforce doing the work at any given time.
head doesnt not sit on the # part wont affect it
thing is the machine usually runs the length of the deck..know some use CNC machines perhaps they can make an adjustment to where they can deck the block and have the machine stop before the pad.
Rather have the rebuild done right.
if it were me id just docuement before the rebuild with a random stamp somewhere that is it truly the same block thats all that matters if youre selling it that its original right?
If someone complains about a stamp at that point they arent seriousjust dont believe if somoene fell in love with your car they would walk away over that if you had proof.
Opinions may vary.
