Default VIN on a 1957

I don't know much about 57's, but are this VIN tag concerning at all seeing that it's held on with phillips head screws?

Crazy, but that's the way the factory did it.

Nope, the VIN tags were attached by two pan head, Phillips, machine screws, from 53 to 60, when they started spot welding them to the steering column.

No, they all are phillip head as picture shows. I've had several of these early cars and that's the way the vin plate is held on. It never made sense to me. Looks like they would of used pop rivets or use the type of screw that goes in but not out, like you see on restroom doors.

The early 60 models were held by phillip screws as shown, in Dec 59 they switched to spot welding on the steering column (somewhere around vin 1800), The state inspectors were very suspicious of my early 60 since the book said they began welding in the 60 model year, but they eventually passed it. Your picture of the 57 tag would be correct. Here's some pictures of another early 60 and a 56 I found when looking for pictures for the inspectors:

I am a C2 guy so this is all new to me and I can learn something tonight. We have three sample tags and the word "Chevrolet" reads as a positive on all tags because it was punched from the back side.
Some of the id numbers are punched as a negative because they are punched on the finished face on two of the three tags. The third id number was punched form the rear like the word Chev. Are both front and rear id number punching correct?

Thanks Greg

When we did the frame off on the 56 back in 74, I chose to put the VIN plate back on with pop rivets.

Back in the late 60's guys were swapping vin tags and titles like playing cards. I sold my 54 body and frame to a guy who had two other parts cars that he was going to build one decent car from.

I knew a guy back i n the 70s that had a wooden plaque with a dozen C1 VIN tags screwed to it. He had it hanging on his wall.

I wish I had a picture of it now.

Yes, the stamping are correct. Up until Dec 59 when tags were switched to the steering column, they were stamped aluminum tags. The embossed tags were stainless so they could be spot welded to the column. Early 1960 cars we're attached to the jam like the blue one shown in the picture.

Good idea to check the frame numbers.
