Earliest 427
Was the 427 engine options available from the beginning of the 1966 model year? Does anyone know the earliest known 427? Thanks

The lowest number shown on the C2 Registry is #109. It's not likely the first since they only have 2.5% of the 1966 cars registered.
My #69 a 327/300 is the third one listed.

That 427 was a W (mk 1) motor like a 409. It wasn't ever offered as an option for C2s.

If you knew who to ask, you could get a 427 in a '63 Vette. Mickey Thompson knew:

It must have been awful embarrassing for Chevrolet to get beat by a lowly Tempest with a rubber band for a drive shaft and a PowerGlide transmission.

For 1963, The 427 engine was not an option that one could go down to the dealer and check off.
The big-block originally nesting in their engine bays was not any sort of production big-block but was what’s known as a Mystery Motor, one of maybe 50 (50, no typo) Mark IIS prototype engines produced in the development of what eventually became the 396ci/427ci/454ci Chevrolet big-block.

I'd nominate '65 Convertible #003, formerly owned by Jack Pringle of MI and now residing in OK. Appeared at the 1985 National in Boston wearing one of its one-off Mark IV fender emblems (left the other at home in case something happened en route).

Are you sure that Tempest isn't being lapped Mike?
Somehow I suspect you are going to show me that's not the case.

This is a history test. You can look it up.
Those Tempests were possibly the baddest cars to come out of Detroit in that era.
They never seem to get their due respect.

If you're going to win, you have to finish.
Ford won the Nascar Manuf. Championship from '63-'69 when they dropped out of Nascar.

1981 NCRS Naional @ St. Louis, IIRC. Owner of VIN 003 would install side emblem(s) for photos, and immediately remove for safe-keeping.
