Have encountered a headlight problem on my 66. First, are the pop up headlights electric or vacuum? Second, I have one light that opens fine, the other opens very slowly and stops about 2/3 way open. Search hasn't turned up a decent answer to my specific question. I'm pretty handy, how easy of a fix is this?
Electric, a motor for each bucket. Could be a motor going bad, bad connections, bad ground, or the end pivots and ***** on each end of each motor with old dried up grease. Should be plenty of past info here on your problem. Search from Google search like, '66 Corvette headlight bucket inoperative corvette forum' and hit search from google. The first search found should be all the posts on here about your query.
63-67 Corvettes have electric headlight motors. 68-82 used a vacuum system, to raise and lower the headlights.
If you have a "lazy" headlamp, it's likely a tired motor, in need of a rebuild. Sometimes all they need is to have the gearbox cleaned out and re-greased, instead of a complete rebuild. A motor that doesn't go all the way up, could have a bad gear, but normally a bad gear won't make a motor roll over slowly.
First thing to do would be to remove the motor (or at least back it out of the slot) then, rotate the bucket by hand up and down. It should move very freely. If it binds, that's your issue. If it moves freely it's the motor.
