a/c mufflers
Can anyone tell what year these mufflers were used. The black one is much heavier than the other. Both I believe to be GM issued but not sure.
Thanks Ric

I don't know these mufflers as well as I possibly should..............but the black one appears to me to be aftermarket replacement and not GM.
Aluminum one with the two connections probably for 1965-early 66 cars......as I know they went to a single connection on the block later in 1966 and all of 1967.
Hopefully others will help in better identifying.

That black muffler is definitely correct for '63 & '64 cars (and maybe a few early '65s). If you look closely, you should find a Weatherhead logo on it. It should not be painted.
Page 122 in Adams Vol. 2 shows the 1963 setup with this heavy orange juice can. Page 217 shows the same style in a '64.
The '65 photo on page 270 shows the one-piece aluminum can with Noland's note: "the C60 manifold fittings were revised for 1965".
OK, but did they scrap any leftover inventory of the prior configuration? It's likely that some early '65s came with the earlier can IMHO.
Be advised, 1965 judging guide calls out the aluminum style. This in spite of the AIM calling out two optional muffler part numbers.
BTW: The service port caps should be "acorn hex", plated brass, usually with the Weatherhead logo. Expensive buggers to buy if you can find them.
My input FWIW. Mike

I think the silver one is a 63-64, because it has two fittings (valves). 65 and later mufflers only had a single fitting, installed on one end or the other of the manifold portion of the muffler, depending on the application.
I agree with Powershift that the black one doesn't look like a GM part.

a/c muffler
The black one has a ' W' with an arrow through it on both ends of the muffler itself. I have another muffler that looks like the silver one except the schrader valves are on the sides not the top and the short pipe is tipped downward slightly. Ric

The last one I referred to with the valves on the side with the tipped pipe I thought was used for 66 production that is why I did not include with the others?

That's the Weatherhead logo that I mentioned. In addition to the muffler and service port caps, Weatherhead also supplied the brass vacuum switch (top of heater box on A/C cars) and brass carb fittings.
The aluminum muffler with side service ports shows up in almost all photos of "correct" '65 cars, but the short fitting comes straight out.
That other aluminum muffler with top service ports is a style I've never seen before...

Thanks Mike
So from what you have told me the cap on the left is correct for 63-64 what about the one on the right? As you can see the other muffler is in use on my 66 so it is not for sale. If I find any others in my garage I will let you know. What type of cap was used on the 66?

Service Port Cap
Ric:
based on everything I have seen/read/been told: the cap on the left is correct for your '66 with the possible exception of being unplated.
The 1965 judging guide wants those hex caps to be zinc or cad plated.
Doubt whether it changed for '66.
Here's one on Ebay that Jeff is selling:
This is the 100% correct piece, I would say.

Mike G is correct (as always)..............
The black can did not look typical GM to me, and I guess in the early days of C2 air conditioning they simply purchased from another company until they got things sorted out internally. It looks (looked) like a Four-Seasons part to me, but the Weatherhead logo is a dead giveaway who made it.
The aluminum manifold appears to be what LICS is selling for 1963-64 cars (#35-12A) so it must be a later service replacement of some sort.
Mike is also correct on the Weatherhead sealing caps.

a/c muffler
Thanks Mike and Larry.....The 2 caps in my picture are brass I also have a couple of the hex type caps that appear to be aluminum. I was just wondering if the muffler with the caps on top could be an early 65. I know I have had that muffler over 30 years, once owned a 65 serial # 399, may have come off of that car not really sure.
