Just remove the tach cable housing at the generator and tach. The cable might have a crimped sleeve on the cable at one end. Pull it out of the housing and install a new cable. Some come with squared ends and some come with a plastic end that glues on to the cable if it needs to be cut to fit. If your old cable is broken off on either end, it should pull right out.

I am referring to the shaft that is inside the tach and holds the needle or pointer

I read it again. I guess I misunderstood his question. Are you sure it's broken or just worn out where there cable is inserted?
Yes i am sure.. when i bought the car the pointer was off and laying inside of glass
so when i redid everything i took the tach apart hoping to reinstall the needle
i was unpleasantly surprised to find half the shaft still attached to the pointer and the other half still attached inside of the tach

I think the shaft is part of the worm magnet assembly. Your best bet would be to send it out for repair. I have not seen those parts sold individually ever.
In the past you could buy the repair assembly, but it's no longer sold directly to individuals. Pilot Dan

I do have another non working tach i was hoping to remove the shaft from
My problem is one is generator tach the other is distributor driven
I was hoping to remove shaft from one to fix the other
but from what i read its the gear that make them different
Thx Dan

Not only that, but if you are going to all the trouble to remove it and you start switching parts (even if you had them) what method would you use to assure the rebuild was properly calibrated? I am ALL FOR doing stuff yourself, but this is one of those times it is not worth it.

that is why i was hoping the shaft only could be exchanged easily
I might just go with the electronic kit most of the suppliers cary
