It's easy, just put the side that goes on the column on the box, and the side that goes on the box on the column. They both have flat spots.
The spline circle inside the rag joint ends is round, the flat in the steering column shaft is not made to be matched to a flat on the coupler, it's simply a installation aid to clock to the coupler split so everything lines up straight.
I have the rag joint apart. The couplers are identical. Each one will fit both shafts. There is a flat spot on the steering shaft but not the small shaft that is part of the steering box. There are no flat areas on the inside of the couplers.

It will go on either way. Might as well put it on as in the judging guide. My 65 was on this way:
The rag joint cloth is riveted to the half that goes on the steering column shaft. The flat on the steering column shaft indexes to the slit on the upper half so the tightening bolt goes through.
The lower rag joint half slit indexes to the high mark on the steering box worm gear.
The picture from 65GCvert looks to me like the lower half is 180* off.
