Default 54 radio ***** scratching dash paint lightly

I am going to be driving my barn find all summer before getting some paint on her in the fall. In the meantime I am researching a few missing parts and preplanning some issues. The radio ***** are causing slight, but noticeable circlular scratches on the white painted dash.

So before I do the repaint, including dash, just curious if anyone has run into this and what can be done to prevent it. Very thin felt washer?

Thanks in advance as usual.

Steve

Steve, I have owned several 54 Corvettes and have never had that happen but you may want to go with the felt washer like you said or maybe a small rubber o ring om the stem of the radio and slide the **** down the stem and you should have enough clearance from the rubber o ring to be OK.

I assume your running an OE radio
Is the dash original ?
No repairs adding additional thickness??
Somthing is amiss here....

It is OEM radio... and no idea about any obvious repairs.. I will pop up some of the applicable photos tomorrow when I get some light.......

If it's original equipment, someone's had the radio out and reinstalled it incorrectly. Remount the radio to solve the problem.

If everything is original and no repairs of any kind have been made to the dask they nothing should rub but in 65 years who knows but I would try a small felt washer or a small rubber washer or O ring of some type. Kind of like sliding on a condom only a rubber O ring on the stem of the radio not on your stem.

sounds like a rookie mistake and someone left the nut on the stem installed it then installed another nut so the radio is not sitting flush.
R&I it and see what is on the stem

Ding/ Ding / Ding... nailed it sir.

Tune **** stem had nut behind dash face which caused the obvious scarring on that side and the other side although the nut was on dash side over the washer, it likely still scarred as well because it couldn't seat through all the way. Bubba ......it would have been so easy to do right in the first place.

And based on the paint on the shaft and washer he previous owner likely didn't fully remove radio at time of painting..

Truer words were never spoken. Out of 44 year being married to this red head I have probably waited on her to get ready so we can go someplace (like now I am waiting on her so we can go out to eat) about 22 years in time. Now that is the truth.
