Bubba's Modification Thread
Bubba has gotten to a lot of Corvettes and he has certainly gotten to mine. I thought it would be fun to post some pics of what Bubba has done to our C1/C2's. Maybe we can laugh a little about it.
Bubba didn't like the stock intake manifold on my '66 300hp so he bought a new one. He bought a polished Edlebrock EPS Performer. But when Bubble bought the intake manifold, he didn't know that Edelbrock specifically states that it would not fit under the stock Corvette hood!
So what did Bubba do to 'fix' Edlebrock's mistake? He cut the air horn completely off the original carburetor so the air filter element (with no air filter base, so no seal and no real air filtering going on anyway) would fit lower enabling Bubba to shut the hood! No more date code on the carb and no more choke. Nice!
A few Vettes back I bought a 65 from Bubba. Now Bubba was a big guy and thought he would be better served with a set of C3 seats and wasn't too particular on how to mount these new seats given the 2X4's I found under them.
The Sears cruise control was a nice touch as was the Ecklers flair kit.
Unfortunately no pictures but a bent front spindle from a front accident prevented full thickness, new brake pads from going in place. Bubba came up with a quick fix - grind the pads on that side down to about 1/2 thickness and - eureka, it's fixed.
Had the car in the shop because i didnt like the ride height or the stance
Shop owner told me PO had extra leaf put in the springs,,, so asked him to remove and reband,,, he called me back to let me know that one leaf on each side had a completely broken leaf
So im not sure if PO installed the extra leaf to cover the broken one or to add height to the car because of the very large tires he had on it at the time
I forgot about the springs in my 66. When I tore it down it had the very rare 10 leaf rear spring (created by cutting the bolt eyes off of another bottom leaf and inserting it in the spring pack. Wish I had kept a picture of the front springs I removed - they were so tall the car mostly rode on the upper jounce bumper. I always figured they came out of some model station wagon.
I was Bubba forty years ago. Anyone that has a 1969 green coupe #427 does not have the original motor due to my putting a rod through the block. They also have a dash mounted 8 track tape player because I filed the radio opening wide enough to fit the 8 track. Ouch......

I now have new springs, tires and rims
Is that a "back-up" light that Bubba installed (center of picture, almost touching the differential)?

1. Added a lowering block to one side to get my corvette to sit properly. I know trashy but whatever the car sits even now.
2. Used a 65 muncie/bell housing so had to redesign the cross shaft to work with the later bell housing.
3. Used a bushing instead the of the rubber bushing for the clutch.
4. Left a craftsman 9/16 deep socket in the door near the hinge. It fell and even a magnet would not remove it. Token of my work...
5. Used plastic drywall anchors to install the sill plates and door panels.
6. Used the paperclip method for the door access panels
7. Used a cotter pin as an anchor point for one of the stainless steel screws on the door panel near the door pillar.
8. Added lowering shims for the transmission to get the angle corrected.
9. Used some hose holders from auto parts store for the pcv and water temperature sensor wire.
10. Used auto parts hose clamps. Had a bad experience with the correct ones.
11. Added larger diameter the exhaust flanges to work for 2 1/2 versus 2 inches.
12. I had used the wrong defroster bezel. I had a good one and instead used one which was cut off. Came up with a way to fasten it down to the dash pad.
13. Added padding to the dash pad one one side trying to remove a crease from storing the pad too long.
14. Added fuses/fusiable links. Not sure if thats bubba or not.
15. Added insulation around the engine harness wires near the shielding. Bad experience...
16. Used tape to prevent the horn to contact one spot on the hub.
17. Used a dowel and added zerks to the clutch z bar.
18. Added a spacer to the fan to get it sitting correctly into the shroud.
19. Added insulation around the radiator.
20. hacked up the rear license light wiring to get it work. Not realizing there were different from mid year to 1962. Found out later on. Works fine and leaving it.
21. Inverted a cheap air cleaner then cut a hole larger enough for an Edelbrock carburetor.
Not taking credit for...
bubba hacked a radiator shroud repair job and horrible.
bubba grounded down the double hump markings to make cheater heads.
Yeah, bubba... But it all is working and no problems so far.
I don’t get the complaint of the OP about no filtering. Sure the air horn is gone and thus the numbers and that is bad; but no filtering?
The ring is still there on top of the carb for the filter base. If there is no AF base in the AF assembly, what is the filter sitting on?
1 - Wood screws
2- carpet tacks
3- a red and white knee high gym sock as a fiberglass backer in a hood
4- slotted head screws
5- flat galvanized sheetmetal
6- woven chicken wire as a backer
7- table place mat used as fiberglass mat
8- diamond grate material as a backer
9- body filler over a 1/2 inch thick
10. vertical cuts will no sleeve/backer
When I got my 64 and was going through it, I had to take a double take at the u-joints, I couldn't believe that one cup in the front and rear were missing the clips. I am surprised the cups didn't fly out.
Bolts loose and washers added to shim up the trans because he put the wrong Hurst shifter in.
Bubba didn't like that my car was a no-radio car and cut the dash to install one. He actually did a fair job but couldn't fit the bezel in. I filed it out, cleaned up the **** holes and made it look proper. However, he drilled the antenna hole about 8 inches off and installed a fixed antenna - things I corrected when I tore the car down.

No AF base. I had to buy one. The AF was propped up by the carb body!
