Default Transmission Experts Needed

As my resto continues, I'm moving into about 45 years collection of BW and Muncie parts, in addition to the tranny that was in the car. It should be a close ratio Muncie, has the one ring on the clutch shaft, but it checks out closer to a 2.5 something. Can you actually run a close ratio input shaft with a different counter gear? I've never known or witnessed something like this. In my parts, the single ring inputs shafts are all 2.20 ratio. I know I have to open it up to be certain, but haven't put the engine parts away, so I'm doing planning for now. I only have so much room to operate.

Put the transmission in 1st gear and rotate the input shaft and count the revs on the output shaft and you have your answer.

Deplorable transmission expert.

The 63-65 M20 WR input is 27 teeth and the cluster is 29 teeth, 65-74 is 21 input and 25 cluster.
The M21 CR is 26 input and 27 cluster so I do not think you can use an M20 input with a M21 cluster.

Mike, I agree. Done that. Got a strange answer. I don't think it is 2.56 or 2.54. And it has that single ring for a 2.20. I have a feeling you know your way around a 4 speed!

plaidside, I agree. That is why I'm stumped. Wondered if you could put the 27 tooth input on a 27 tooth cluster. Don't think they would mesh right. I don't think it's possible, but though I'd ask the experts.

We'll know soon enough when I get around to opening it up.

Not sure but I think the aftermarket offers alternate ratios. For this answer, you need a real expert.

The single ring is not a definite identifier considering different OEM tranmissions and the aftermarket offerings.

Well, I'm now an expert as I know. But I'm also a dummy as I obviously can't chew gum and walk. It's 2.20 as the single ring input has 26 teeth and the counter is 27 teeth. I sure wish I knew how I miss counted the turns. Kept getting more than 2.2 and less than 2.5. Oh well, thanks guys, on to other confusing issues.

Man, I hate the smell of GL4

FYI, Early 7/8" M-20 is 24T input/29T cluster= 2.56 1st gear...

Later 1" M-20 is 21T input/25T cluster= 2.52 1st gear...

M-21/22 is 26T input/27T cluster=2.20 1st gear...

2.54 1st gear is a wide ratio early T-10...

Hope this helps... Crash

Good summary. I've got T-10 and Muncie parts all over and can never keep the 2.5 ratios correct in my mind. Just went through labeling them while I have enough sense to figure it out. Maybe I'm too late though!
