Oil pump
Didn't the SHP engines (which the L78 is) come with a stiffer spring in the pump ??? The pump itself is the same for both regular & SHP engines, but the bypass valve spring is different. I have a feeling that when you get a pump, it will come with 2 springs.

I need this info to spec out the correct oil pickup screen.

If you have a factory windage tray in place, you need a big block Corvette specific pump pick up. Passenger car and truck pickups won't clear the windage tray. Long Island Corvette has them. Part no. 38-35B.

The Melling pump I installed on the 1966 427 during the rebuild last year did indeed come with 2 springs. I called Melling and asked which spring to use and I did have to change it. I forgot which color spring I used, but it is important to use the correct spring.
Also, you're going want to braze the pickup tube to the pump or at least dimple the tube with a center punch and apply bearing retainer type loc-tite. I prefer brazing it, but those tubes can slip right off the pump easily

I usually take the new ones apart and blueprint them!
I check the face to the gears and the flatness of those surfaces and put them on a flat table with a sheet of Emory cloth! I polish the orffices and the interior body! I debur the gears! I feel they should be cleaned of manufacturing debris anyways! I test fit the pan with play doh to see that I have the right pickup height! My oil pans usually are studded, but just a couple of studs makes things easier! Some of the Mellings pumps now have screws securing the pickup, but you can still braze them on! Most guys get all crazy on the amount!
