Default 53-55 differential help needed

I have my differential disassembled, powder coated and ready to put back together. Before I proceed I need some help/advice from forum members who have experience with these units. The service manual says to drive the pinion gear into the carrier using tool J-4050 to set the pinion gear/rear bearing clearance. Then the locking collar is set against the front bearing with the 4 tapered screws. The problem is I don't have the J-4050 tool nor a press.

I'm thinking of heating the carrier and freezing the pinion gear and use a mallet to drive the pinion into the housing. Problem is I don't have the tool. If I knew the tool thickness I could probably use a feeler gauge.

My second option is to take the unit to a machine shop who has a press, but still lack the tool to measure the bearing clearance.

The third expensive option is to take it to a local differential specialty shop to assemble everything. However they have quoted $350 for the job. I'd like to do it myself, but before I make a decision, wanted to reach out to forum members for advice.

These old rear ends can be aggravating, especially if you are not familiar with it.

There are plenty of things to "DIY". Don't mess around with it, have an expert do it and be done with it.

The guys that do this regularly will say it is no big deal. It IS no big deal ... TO THEM. There was a time when it was a pain for them as well.

Personally, this is one job that I would definitely farm out, unless I was planning or / needing to do this regularly.

Just my 2 cents.

Take his advice, only thing about a 53 to 55 is that the ring & pinion if bad or damaged cant be replaced with new parts . That's the weak age
rear end of all year Corvette . You damage it your out to lunch finding a replacement ,that's why many 53 to 55"s have a later rear end installed .

Good advice. I was hoping a "non expert" who had done one of these might provide some insight. Probably best left to experts.

Another good point. Thanks, Roy.

PS. I was just up visiting relatives in Lake Tahoe. Next time, I'll try to make a point to drop by and say hi.

If the rear has high miles or the bearings are bad - then I farm them out
Easy to reassemble and easy to paint
