Are you talking about the cable inside the sheath ,or the whole assembly ?

Can any of you refer me to documentation on how to replace the cable? I'd like to make sure I don't create 2 problems when trying to solve 1.
Thanks!
I take the bare cable and insert it into the pump, then align it with the distributor gear. Remove it, stick the cable in the sheath and then into the pump. Then, just stick the cable square end into the distributor. It should already be lined up.

Also, slather more grease on the full length of the cable than you think is reasonable. Your guiding principle should be that too much is not enough.
I use and recommend wheel bearing grease.

Thank you for the welcome and the good advice.
Yes, I'm talking about the cable inside the sheath. I can unscrew the sheath end at the distributor but wanted to make sure I did the right process at the injector side. Hence the request for some direction on the procedure.

Once you unscrew the nut at the distributor end of the cable housing, push the cable housing forward into the high pressure pump. It will move about 1/2".
With your finger tips, grasp the flange on the cable inside the housing and move it forward into the high pressure pump. Once you push it far enough, the end of the cable will clear the shaft in the distributor
Swing the cable and housing away from the distributor.
Grab the housing and pull it to the rear, out of the high pressure pump.
posted just to illustrate cable running car at normal speed, as in roadside cable replacement, sans housing, will be fine to get you home.
Even more than that. As long as you aren't a lead foot, you can drive for a long time with a bare cable. Just don't do wide open throttle and expect the cable to be happy about it.
Disclosure: Because I R&R FI units on my car pretty often, I never install the cable in the casing. Doing so would slow down my work.
