Default 1954 Automatic question

I have a 54 all original. The transmission works great on upshift.

When locked into low range and coasting down hill it offers no compression and just free wheels

Is this normal.

Thank you Harold.

Definitely not normal.

Have you checked the fluid level? When the trans-mission fluid is low in my '54 (usually because the car sat for a while and the trans puked) the transmission will do odd things.

Jim

Thanks Jim. The fluids level is fine and the fluid was changed a few months back.

Had the car for a few years and never noticed anything until we went for a ride in the wine country. On some back county roads in some step hills tried to use low to slow down and nothing.

Off to do more research. Thanks for the help

Sorry I couldn't have been of more help, Harold. I'm not a trans-mission expert. I do know our '54 pretty well, tho; it's been in the family 46 years.

Definitely not right, Harold.

Should not free-wheel down hill in low range. I had my 54 for ~18 years.

Don't know where to tell you to begin to look for the problem either.

I would look at the linkage. Could be that it's not completely in low gear.

If Roy Bratz would log on once in a while he used to work on them and actually made a rebuild video.

I ended up taking my cast iron '54 Powerglide to an old school guy who knows the tricks to make them run like they should have from the beginning. Since I had mine done it doesn't leak, doesn't puke (I leave it in park for months at a time) and works perfect.
