Removing 6 Quart Oil Pan With Side Exhaust
I need to remove the 6 Qt pan on my '65 to replace the gasket. I understand that you disconnect the idler arm at the frame and swing it out of the way so the pan will clear. Will the idler arm clear the side exhaust? Didn't want to remove the side exhaust if I don't have to. Thanks

Idler Arm
I don't think side exhaust makes any difference. You just unbolt the idler arm from the chassis and swing it downward and forward towards the front of the car to get the steering linkage clear of the pan.

Side exhaust
I replaced the rear main seal on my 66 with side pipes and there was no problem with clearance. If the main is old, now would be the time to change it. Jerry

For what it is worth, I had the drop my RH side pipe in order to allow me to pull the steering linkage down far enough to remove my 5qt oil pan.

jtranger,
No problem with side exhausts. In addition to dropping the idler arm, before doing that, bump the harmonic balancer so the index line is at the 5 o'clock position (as you face the front of the motor). Doing this will rotate the counterweights on top allowing the pan to clear them.

Sounds pretty straight forward to me. Drop the pan, remove any obstructions in the path, adjust components ( crankshaft ) to clear a path. Just some common sense and hand tools. This has been done in many driveways on a creeper.
