factoid (or urban legend...)... other than a power loss, you could disable either 5 or 7 and probably not notice it as they follows one another in the firing order
Seriously tho, I've never seen that...if somebody ground the characters off they did a damn fine job, but why ? Why the "I" in the phrase "Firing order" and the "7" in the digits ?
Isn't cast iron manufactured in a mold and doesn't the mold have the embossed characters already embedded in it ? It is a bit strange..

The short answer is that the #'s were soldered or glued on to the pattern & the I & 7 fell or got knocked off before the sand molds were made. It happens a lot if the letters & #'S are not cast in the pattern casting.
A person has to actually install the numbers/letters in the sand mold.
The old saying has always been to not buy a car built on Mon or Fri.
On Mon, workers are hung over from the weekend, and are prone to making mistakes.
On Fri, workers are in a rush to get off for the weekend, so they get in a hurry and get careless.
Obviously, your manifold was cast on a Mon or Fri.

Probably cast early on Tuesday morning after a three day weekend.
As a young adult, I worked in this type environment for a few years. Saw plenty.
